Break Time

I’ll be taking a little break for the next few days to spend time with my family and catch up a bit.  We’ve had construction going on in the house, getting things ready for baby, and there’s just lots to be done to finalize things.  And I’m running out of steam a bit as I just hit 34 weeks yesterday.  I can’t believe I only have 6 weeks (or less to go)!

So I’m giving in to what my body is trying to tell me and trying to slow down a bit, which means for me getting more than 6 hours of sleep each night.  I’ve been trying to take the kids to a lot of fun places since their summer break ends in 2 weeks, and I’ve also been planning a fun event with my friend Jules that I’ll soon share details on, because it involves Pinterest, mingling with other bloggers, food and drink.  At a cute vintage shop here in Southern California.

I look forward to being back the middle of next week.  Until then, stay cool and have a great few days while I’m gone!

Oh and p.s., that view above was from the Ritz Carlton Laguna Beach, taken last night.  While I wish I was taking a break there, sadly I am not.  I’ll just be at home, but hey, at least we have a pool and comfy lounge chairs!  I did venture out last night for appetizers and drinks (grapefruit spritzer for me) for the Mom 2.0 mingler.  I got to see some pretty awesome ladies and chat for a bit about blogging and the Mom 2.0 summit that will be held here in Laguna Beach next year.  I finally get to go and I don’t have to jump on a plane – hooray!  All pictures taken on Instagram, where you can find me @fourflights

Daily Style – Moving On

Shirt – Old Navy; Jeans – Gap; Shoes – Dolce Vita – Purse – Marc by Marc Jacobs; Pins – BanDo; Earrings & Ring – Kate Spade

I bought my first non maternity item for after the baby is born yesterday from J.Crew’s crazy good sale.  I saw it, a floral pencil skirt, and I though “I’m gonna wear that skirt, not sure when or how soon after this baby comes, but I’m gonna wear it.”  I think this means I’ve officially come to the point in this pregnancy where I’m not as excited about dressing the bump, and I’m ready to move on.  This outfit is a perfect example.  Nothing special, just jeans and a striped tee.  But I did try to add some fun pins to jazz it up just a bit.  And I finally found a bag!  Details on that soon though!

Skirt & Tank – Old Navy; Sandals – Red Valentino; Bag – Reed Krakoff; Necklace – DIY by me; Watch – Michael Kors; Ring and Bangle – Kate Spade
There’s a man that sells these amazing African beads at the flea market each month and while I’ve admired them for months, I didn’t really have any ideas of what to do with them, until the other day.  Struck with a bit of inspiration, we made a special trip to the flea market today after church to pick up a few strands.  He has thousands to choose from so it was hard to make a decision, but in the end I’m excited about what I took home and the DIY project I foresee for the near future.

Old Navy was having a 40% off store wide sale last week and I bought just a few longer shirts and 2 of these elastic waist maxi dresses.  I can’t justify buying anymore maternity clothes and so I just needed a couple of longer, light weight shirts to get me through the next few weeks of summer.  This airy rayon tank fits the bill perfectly and I love the flowy monochromatic look when paired with the maxi skirt.  Makes me think cool even though I may not feel cool.  Hoping you all had a wonderful weekend!

Daily Style – Maternity Shoot Part 2

Besides the sparkly dress I showed you all on Wednesday, I also took photos in my favorite dress purchase of the year, this tie dye number from Forever 21. As an after thought, I decided to pack a really casual outfit to change into as well and while I love these shots too, these remind me more of just everyday (really pretty everyday) pictures. I guess that’s not necessarily a bad thing though.

Tie Dye Dress – Forever 21l Shoes – Red Valentino; Accessories – DIY by me and Michael Kors; Sweater – Target; Jean Shorts – H&M Maternity; Tennies – Converse

A couple of people asked me some tips for getting prepared for a maternity photo shoot, and while I may not be the best person to dole out advice since I frantically ran out to Target, the closest store to home, 2 hours before the shoot to get Art a new shirt for our family pictures (see the whole series here and here), there are a few ideas I have in mind:

– Treat this is a very special photo shoot, because it is!  Don’t feel silly about buying a new dress, or even a ridiculously fancy dress, for the occasion.  Get your hair done, and/or your nails.  You will never regret spending the extra time on yourself for this occasion, but you may regret not spending the extra time making it special.

– Plan at least 2 outfit changes to make it more fun and interesting.  If you’re going to spend the time booking the appointment, make it count.

– Get your family involved – just because it’s a maternity photo shoot doesn’t mean it’s only about you. Get pictures of this special time with your husband and any older siblings.  You’re usually so busy ahead of time getting ready for baby that you may not have stopped to get any pictures of you all together, so now’s the time to do it!

– If possible, get outdoors!  Our first two maternity shoots were done inside a studio.  Being outside this time was a refreshing change of pace and made for such a pretty backdrop and amazing lighting!

– Most importantly, wear what you feel comfortable in!  And when I say comfort, I don’t mean your yoga pants.  I mean wear the most flattering outfit you own so that you feel at your best when the photographer is shooting away.  If you a buy a new dress, make sure you try it on ahead of time and plan out your shoes and accessories so that you’re not scrambling at the last minute if your dress is too short or the bust is too tight.  Bottom line, you want to feel pretty, not self-conscious because it will come across in these pictures.  And consider undergarments!  I wore my favorite Forever 21 dress, which I usually wear with a thin strap t-back bra since the straps are so thin.  Normally I don’t mind if a bit of my bra strap shows while out and about, but for the pictures I knew I was going to be tugging at it the whole time, trying to hide the straps.  Miranda told me to just take it off for the shoot and I’m glad I did.  My girls were drooping a bit for a short time, but because the flowy nature of the dress I don’t think you noticed it at all…ahem, at least I hope you don’t!

Well I guess I did have more advice to give than I thought!  Let me know if you have any questions.  If you live in the LA/Orange County area and need a photographer, hit up Miranda.  She has never failed me yet for a photo session and her relaxed nature really puts everyone at ease.  Have a good weekend everyone!

Today I’m sharing how to make cute and simple colorful barrettes over at Making It Lovely.  I told you I was having a barrette obsession lately.  The DIY is simple and cheap 😉  Please hop on over to take a look!

Dress – ASOS Maternity; Shoes – old BCBG; Earrings – Kate Spade

I never imagined I’d buy something so impractical for some pictures.  But when I was browsing through my options and I came across this dress, it seemed perfect to go along with the course of this pregnancy; happy, unexpected, special.  My main concern was if it would be too short, but when it arrived the day before the shoot and it fit perfectly, I knew that every once in a while a little impracticality is in order.

The shoot went wonderfully, and Miranda was patient with my outfit changes and fumbling along the pier in heels, getting stuck every few planks.  I thought I’d start off with the most fun outfit change, and share the more casual shots with you another day.  I told Art tonight that he now must take me out on one date so I can get some use out of this thing.  Happy Wednesday friends!  Linking up with WIWW.

DIY Seeing Stars Hair Clips

I saw these star hair clips months ago and pinned them under my DIY ideas board, knowing that eventually I’d get around to making them.  I’m so glad I finally followed through with the project because they ended up being relatively easy to make and the results are quite pretty, if I do say so myself.  I can see myself wearing these above a pony tail, or to sweep back my bangs as I did in the picture below.  I’m quite smitten with everything <ahref=”http://www.fortheloveof.net/?p=1273″>barrette related right now in fact.  My biggest problem will be keeping Taylor from getting a hold of them.  Here’s the how to so you can make your own.

You’ll need a small can of gold metallic spray paint, some gold jewelry wire (mine was 20 gauge), E600 Epoxy, acrylic craft stars in various sizes (the package contained different sizes and colors and cost $3.49), and hair clips or bobby pins.  I found these great flat and wide bobby pins at Michael’s for $1.79 for a pack of 8 and they are very strong and took the spray paint beautifully. Start off by spray painting your clips and stars and letting them dry completely before handling. Once dry, start applying your stars by dabbing a small amount of the epoxy on the back of each star and affixing to the clip.

With a pair of nippers or wire cutters, snip off small pieces of the jewelry wire, about 1/4″-1/2″ long, and attach the smaller stars t the wire with your epoxy.  Let dry, then attach to the stars/barrette itself. Once you have enough bits of stars on your barrette, let dry for a good 12 hours before wearing.  A note about the epoxy, it does dry fast when you’re working with it, so dab small amounts on your work surface so you don’t waste big globs of it before it dries out.  If you glob on too much, simply scrape off a bit with a toothpick or something similar before it dries.  The back of your stars will show dabs of the epoxy, but as long as you use it sparingly, you won’t be able to see it at all on the right side of the barrette. I’m in love with how they came out, and the total project time took under an hour, not counting drying time.  I can’t wait to use these to make even a simple pony tail feel a bit more special. Enjoy, and let me know if you try it!

Daily Style – Always A Classic

Dress – ASOS Maternity; Tennies – Converse; Necklace – DIY by me; Watch – Michael Kors; Bangles – Kate Spade

It’s so funny to see trends come in and out, and with each trend it seems that the younger generation claims it as their own, or at least claims to have a lock on the updated, better version of the trend.  Most recently NEON made a come back, as well as barrettes, both of which I distinctly and fondly remember from the 80’s.  With both trends, claims are made that this current way is better, more sophisticated, and while I can’t necessarily disagree that the neon of today looks better than the neon of yesterday, I think it’s chic factor speaks more to our current tastes rather than one generation’s ability to reinterpret a trend better than another.  Take harem pants for instance, there ain’t no way anyone can make those pants look like anything more than a sagging diaper.  I’m sorry, it’s the truth, some trends should never be repeated; and some trends will look better when left dead for 30 years and then brought back to life.

Another reemerging trend to recently hit the scene are tennies, and wearing them with all types of outfits from dresses to shorts to jeans.  I recently read an article containing tips from a celebrity stylist on how us old folk could carry off such a look without looking like a teenager, as if tennies were solely invented for younger girls and women and we needed an instruction manual to  wear a pair of sneakers.  While the current trend may encompass $300 designer sneakers with fancy details and designer labels, Converse will always be a classic, never go out of style, despite what the trends are, and I can wear them with any look I choose.

My family threw me an amazing baby shower today and I couldn’t have loved it more.  It was truly awesome and I appreciated the thought and love that went into each detail.  It was an exhausting day though, so while I wore these sweet bow flats pretty much all day, when it came time to clean up and get down to business, I changed into my Converse.  Functional, cute, and hey, I think they look kinda cute with the dress.  I have no idea if this would be how a 22 year old hipster would wear it, or if I’m on-trend, but I like it and I feel good.  So there.  I hope you all had a great weekend and are ready for a good week.  It’s finally starting to warm up here and I couldn’t be happier about that.  I’m ready for summer!  Linking up to Monday Mingle.

The Dress

I couldn’t help myself, sparkles just seemed appropriate for a third and final baby.  Of course I did do a couple of outfit changes, so it’s not just all sequins and sparkles.  I’ll share the final pictures when I have them.  Can’t wait!  The little sneak peeks Miranda was showing me through her camera got me vewy vewy excited!

DIY Inspiration – Barrettes

I haven’t worn a proper barrette since I was a little girl, but this Spring I started seeing the reappearance of pretty detailed barrettes all over the place and I love how they are looking in flowy hair or to make a simple bun seem not so simple.  I especially love that they serve a purpose besides looking pretty; capturing wayward hairs.  My hair get so many fly aways and since I’ve been growing it out, it often gets in my face and annoys me.  But a pretty barrette may be just what I need to tame the mane while I’m working or even just trying to stay cool.  I have the supplies to attempt to make my own sweet barrette, and if it goes well, the DIY will be up on the blog next week.  Wish me luck!
