Out and About In Olvera Street

A few weeks ago Tea Collection asked me to take part in their “Across The Street, Across The Globe” series on their blog, and share one of my favorite spots in our area where I love to explore other cultures.  For those of us who aren’t able to travel internationally for various reasons, but still want to expose our children, and ourselves, to various cultures and all they have to offer, what do we do, where do we go, type of post.  IMG_5091 IMG_5020 IMG_5035

I immediately thought of Olvera Street, a Mexican marketplace held on a small street, in the oldest area of Downtown LA.  I’ve been going to Olvera Street since I was a kid and have nothing but amazing memories of school field trips, $1 grab bag goodie bags, snow cones, fresh homemade tortillas, and shopping for huarache sandals.  It’s been quite some time since I last took the kids there by way of the Metro, Sydney was a newborn in fact, so I was ready to reintroduce Olvera Street to them, now that they were older and more aware. IMG_5007 IMG_5005 IMG_5012 IMG_5062

At the Tea Collection blog, Studio T, I’m sharing our day at Olvera Street, and all that we did there.  Please, if you have a moment, head on over and say hi, or ask a question.  It would be awfully nice to see a friendly face over there.  Here are a few pictures of our day, and I share some more over there.

Thanks and have a great day!

Daily Style – Dressing Like A Lady For My Man

_8006733 Dress – London Times; Shoes – Vera Wang For Kohl’s; Clutch – American Apparel; Cuff – Vintage

As you all know, yesterday was Father’s Day. And so, to celebrate my husband, I decided to dress like a lady and wear one of his favorite dresses. I don’t know why he loves this dress so much, whether it’s the color or the flowy skirt or what exactly, but every time I wear it he’s all, “You look GOOD babe”, and I’m all, “Really?” I wasn’t even planning to do a style post on this dress because while it’s lovely, it’s nothing ground breaking, which really means it’s a classic.   Classics are fabulous and you need plenty of them in your wardrobe, you just don’t always think the classics are always going to be the winners though, right?  But I posted the above picture on Instagram and got so many sweet compliments on it I figured, it’s a winner for a reason. IMG_5530

IMG_5580

So no, this dress isn’t the most cutting edge or expensive or coolest dress ever, but it’s very pretty, and if I can be so bold, it makes me look pretty. Rather, it enhances my beauty as a woman. It’s timeless in silhouette, it’s color brightens up my face, and it’s length and fit are both lady-like, but sexy in a subtle, discreet way. It reminds me of a dress from the 50’s or 60’s, when women wore dresses like this everyday, not just to church on Sunday, which is in fact the only time I wear this dress. IMG_5592

IMG_5586

To cut down just a bit on the very ladylike features of this dress, I pair it with a metallic skinny belt and some metallic mary-jane heels, with an ever so slight platform. I carry leather zipper pouch versus a handled handbag to update it a bit too.

Yesterday was a long day, from church to Father’s Day breakfast to Taylor’s dance recital, to picking up dinner for my man, my feet were in fact aching a bit but I stayed comfortable and lady like in my dress all day long. dress

If you follow me on Instagram and caught my post of the last picture, you’ll know that I had a stranger take that picture. I was so embarssed though, that when she asked me if I was from out-of-town (hence, why I wanted my picutre taken), I lied and said, “Yes!”. So now I’m crazy, and a liar.

Hope you all had a fantastic Father’s Day weekend!

When Being Thin Doesn’t Make You Happy

20090725_3144 For my entire life, I’ve been what most would consider thin.  At 5’10”, I’ve always fluctuated between 125-140 pounds, 125 more during the high school years, and 140 after having children.  Four years ago this summer, I hit my “goal” weight of 125 pounds, a number I hadn’t weighed since I was 16, and declared it on my driver’s license.  Four years ago, my biggest goal at the time, was to reach my high school weight again.  After months of intense boot camp workouts and strict eating, I finally hit that goal weight.  That’s me in the picture above, at 125 pounds, a fit mother of 2.  While I certainly wasn’t miserable, I can’t say that once I had met my goal, I was ridiculously happy, or satisfied even.

In high school I ran track and cross country, and while I can’t necessarily remember eating a horrible diet everyday, I do know that I grew up on lots of cheap, easy food.  While my grandmother and mother both cooked every night and take out or fast food wasn’t a regular part of our daily eats, I hardly remember much fresh fruits and vegetables at all.  We ate canned peas, canned green beans, canned peaches, canned potatoes even.  It was what we could afford.  When we weren’t eating out of a can, dishes like green chile chicken enchiladas, with the tortillas individually fried, meat and potato tacos, with the taco shells fried, were a regular staple and while damn good, weren’t particularly healthy.  I drank multiple sodas everyday.  Through a combination of good genes and regular running, I stayed thin.

When I entered college and stopped running on a daily basis, and continued eating as I did, I gained the typical freshman 15.  I wasn’t heartbroken because for the first time I had boobs, ones that filled out a C cup easily.  I didn’t complain one bit.  The fifteen stayed on until I graduated, and once I started working on my career like a crazy person, the weight somehow came off and continued to stay off.  Somewhere in my twenties I took up running again and trained for, and completed a half marathon.

By my late twenties, I decided I better learn to start cooking something other than Marie Callender’s frozen pot pies and those Contadina refrigerated raviolis.  I was expecting my first child after all, and due to the progression of my career, I had been exposed to a wider, more sophisticated array of food.  I met and worked with people whose lips had never even touched a canned pea.  I started watching Food TV and became interested in cooking more healthy dishes, but I still never really understood nutrition, and the way food, and how you eat, could effect your body and metabolism.  At age 30 I had never dieted a day in my life and had no intention of ever starting.

After I had Taylor, the weight slowly came off and by a year old, she pretty much weaned herself and I was back to my previous weight and figure, just slightly softer than before.  I got pregnant with Syd just 6 months later, and that pregnancy took a much different toll on my body.  By the time he was a year old, I was still holding onto a good 15 extra pounds than before, so I decided to get more serious.

I read Jillian Michael’s Making The Cut, and for the first time I learned about nutrition and healthy eating, portion control, maximizing my metabolism, and on and on.  My mind was blown.  I hadn’t realized how badly I had been eating, and decided to do the 30 day diet/exercise plan she outlined.  It was the first time I had ever followed a diet and I was miserable for most of it, but after 30 days I had lost 20 pounds and was in the best shape of my life, even better than when I ran the half marathon.  After a few months though, I felt like I was plateauing in my fitness routine, so I joined the crazy boot camp that got me to my “goal weight” of 125 pounds.  I began working out 5 days a week at 6 am, and started following the boot camp leader’s meal plan of raw veggies and lean proteins.  After a few weeks I thought I was going to turn into a piece of raw broccoli or a chicken leg, but I was seeing the results so I persevered.  I was fucking miserable on that stupid diet, which by the way, included twice daily doses of cod fish oil.  But as he pointed out, I was losing my mom pooch!  After about 3 months of that nonsense I weighed in at 125.

The thing about reaching that goal weight though, was that I wasn’t satisfied, and I wanted more.  While I never teetered in the eating disorder territory, I did become highly, highly attune to my body, to an almost obsessive level.  I thought about each bite of food I ate and what that would do for me, or to me.  I thought about my body constantly, and if I thought my arms looked great, I thought my butt could get tighter, or my abs could get more defined.  I thought and thought and thought about how everything I did or ate would effect the ideal body image in my head, that I worked so hard to achieve.  If I did something that could jeopardize it, I felt guilt.  If I aced my eating plan, and yes I had an eating plan and recorded every bite of food I took, I dreamed of how I would reward myself with a skinny cow.

Bottom line, I was thinking way too much about myself and my body.

It was no way to live, and it was most certainly not the way God wanted me to live.

I wasn’t miserable, or curled up in a ball freaking out if I had a cookie, or starving myself, or throwing up.  I was just way too consumed with myself and my physical being.

In the Fall, after the Summer where I hit my goal weight, I suffered an injury during an intense boot camp session and I couldn’t work out for a month.  A month turned into two and then six months later, I was fully healed but had no desire to workout again.  I was burnt out both mentally and physically.  I had worked out 6 months straight, 5 days a week, at 6 am, and my body needed the rest.

Because my metabolism was in such hyper-drive, I continued to lose weight and kept it off for months after stopping all work outs entirely.  I look back on some pictures and I was so. stinking. skinny.  But I remember still, even still (!), being critical of myself.  Looking at myself in the mirror, pinching a bit of skin on my tummy and feeling disappointed in that last little bit of remaining “fat”.  I hadn’t reached eating disorder territory, but I had definitely reached skewed body image territory.

It’s been almost 4 years since I injured myself and I’ve never gone back into intense workouts like I did back then.  I’ve continued to stay active and do different forms of exercise, but I have yet to find that same form of discipline I had back then, and I don’t think I ever want to.  That kind of discipline was obsessive level and wasn’t healthy for me.  I took on a full time job for a year, which had me traveling and working so much I couldn’t even think of my body, and then when I left that job I got pregnant with Hayden soon after, and well, here I am.

I officially hit my “9 months on, 9 months off” time frame for weight loss, and I’m still a little ways off.  Had I written and published this post a couple of weeks ago, I would have told you that I’m at a standstill, because I truly was.  I knew in my head I wanted to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight of 135 pounds because I’m an Aries and that’s what we do.  We have an idea in our head and we don’t rest until we get to that idea.  While I had a goal in mind, I wasn’t sure how I wanted to get there.  You see, if any of you reading this know me in real life, or know me enough because you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know that I am the happiest I have ever been.  Hayden has changed my world, our world really.  That kid has brought so much joy into our little lives, I never imagined a baby could bring.  And so I was scared of rocking that joy by becoming caught up in losing weight and trying to get to that perfect place again.  I didn’t want to diet or get back into an insane exercise routine.

And for some crazy reason, it never really occurred to me that I could be okay just staying the way I was.

After all, I felt good enough posing in swimsuits for all the world to see just a couple of months ago, but God forbid I’m not able to say I’m back to my pre-pregnancy weight 9 months after giving birth.

I’m no longer at a standstill though, unsure what to do next in terms of weight loss and “losing the baby weight”.  I’m going to do what continues to make me happy.  Working out a couple of times a week, especially with friends, at Pop Physique.  It’s hard but not intense.  I feel good after going, I look forward to going every single time.  If I really wanted to “lose the baby weight”, I would probably add some intense cardio sessions to my routine, but right now I just don’t wanna, plain and simple.  I’ll continue to not diet, but to work on eating better, more cleanly, thanks in large part to that bitch Gwyneth.  I’m not going to count calories or write down what I ate or go on some crazy fad diet or drink cod oil.

I’m going to continue to let myself be happy.  To love my body and feel comfortable in my own skin.  To love my skin, just the way it is.  If I shed a few more pounds, fantastic.  But that cannot and will not be my goal and my determination of success.  I need to, be at peace with where I land, no matter what the number on the scale says.  I deserve better, and I’m making a promise to give myself better.

I know it may be hard to relate to much of this if you’ve ever truly struggled with weight issues, as I have not.  I’m not expecting this to be relateable to everyone.  But what I do hope many can relate to is that many of us have struggled, or do struggle, with some form of ugly body image issue no matter what our size is.  For me, it was never being satisfied, always wanting to be better, look better, perform better.  It was all consuming and it left me hating working out, my body, and it left me many times, feeling disappointed in myself, when I never, ever should have.  I realize that this may be very, very annoying to some, and it is annoying.  I am thin, and up until very recently, I wasn’t happy just being the way I was.

The future I want for myself doesn’t involve defining success or beauty or health by a number on a scale or by how flat my tummy is, but by how healthy of a life I’m leading.  And health goes so far beyond just the food we use to nourish our body and the physical exercise we perform to keep us strong.  It involves faith and a belief in something beyond us, it involves a loving family, supportive friends, and a husband who wants to make out with you and finds you sexy whether you weigh 125 pounds or 180 pounds (my weight I tapped out at 9 months pregnant with Hayden).  It involves a well rounded list of interests, activities and hobbies, it involves travel and adventure and living life and loving life.  I want to be healthy.  I need to be healthy.  For myself, for my family and for my Creator.  Four years ago my most memorable goal was to weigh 125 frigging pounds.  Today, I have much loftier goals, and not a single one of them involves a number on a scale.

No matter where you may be in your own journey to a healthier life, I hope and pray that you find something to help solidify your goals and the path you want to take.  Those of you that have, or do struggle with weight issues, I apologize if this comes across as insensitive, as that is never my intent.  I want to emphasis that these were my issues, and shouldn’t be taking as judgement of others.  I don’t want to ever, ever come across, that me not being okay with myself should imply that others shouldn’t be okay with themselves.  Whether you deal with true weight issues, or just bad body image issues, my wish is that we all can come to a place where we can be happy with ourselves, by way of physically, or mentally and spiritually getting in shape.  For now, I’m happy to report that I’ve reached that spot and it feels really good.  I hope I can stay here for a long, long time.

Have a great weekend friends.

My 5 Favorite Juices & Smoothies

5-great-juices-to-try While technically Gwyneth didn’t make me actually start drinking juices, she did sort of push me to actually start juicing myself.  When I was pregnant with Hayden I had fierce cravings for citrus, and so I began going to Nektar at least once a week to get their Sublime juice.  The cravings grew into an addiction, and an expensive one at that.  I loved the way they made me feel, recharged, clean, healthy.  All those buzz words people throw around, it they all are in fact true.  For my birthday I asked for Amazon gift cards so I could buy my own juicer, but the gift cards have just sat there for the last 2 months.

So when I picked up her book, and saw that juicing was a big part of the cleanse menu, which I hope to eventually do, I figured I better start juicing.  Before I committed to one though, I took a friend up on her offer to borrow her old Jack LaLanne just to see if I would even mind the process.  It is in fact a process, from start to finish, including the cleaning of all the different parts, you’re in the kitchen for at least 20 minutes.  For me it is absolutely worth it because I LOVE the taste of the juices, and as I said, I feel better after having drank them.  I just wish it wasn’t so time consuming, because I might then juice more. 5-favorite-juice-and-smoothie-recipes

from left to right: carrot beet juice, kid’s favorite juice; carrot cucumber juice, simple green juice, banana almond smoothie

At any rate, even though it is a bit time consuming, it shouldn’t be overwhelming, and so I wanted to show you what I’ve learned and created in just the past week of juicing.  It really is easy, and the juices taste way better than ones you’ll get at Nektar and Whole Foods.  For some reason, it seems like the people at those places try to get all fancy pants and add a bunch of ingredients, but I like the simpler 4-5 ingredient concoctions the best. For all the juices, I don’t worry too much about removing the peels or seeds, but I do remove the knobby ends from things like carrots and cucumbers, and I remove stems from apples. For all juices I just run it straight through the juicer, and for the smoothie I blend in my Cuisanart. I serve all at room temp just as they come out and taste so much better this way. I had been ordering all of my juices from Nektar and Whole Foods over lots of ice and it completely waters down the flavor. I thought I needed the ice to make it more palatable, but these are in fact so fresh and good, ice just ruins them, in my opinion anyhow, and you know I always have an opinion on things!  Oh, and when in doubt, add an apple.  Apples seem to be the secret key ingredient to take the edge off of everything, it’s a nice healthy way to balance flavors and take the earthiness out of greens and beets by adding just a bit of sweet.

carrot-and-beet-juice
Carrot Beet Juice (GP’s recipe from It’s All Good)
2 smaller beets cut up
2 medium carrots cut up
1/2 lemon peel and pith removed
1 medium apple cut up
1 inch piece of ginger

A sweet yet earthy flavor with a vibrant red color.  Hold back on the ginger if you’re sensitive to the taste, like my husband, because the ginger really shows up in this blend.

kids-favorite-juice-concoction

Kid’s Favorite Juice Concoction
This is basically whatever the kids feel like adding in that day, and we have lying around the house, leftover from lunches or those random fruit cups you get at restaurants that the kids never seem to eat. I hate wasting those so I always bring them home, freeze them and then add them to smoothies. Now, we add them to their juices. On this particular day the kids added big globe grapes, an apple, blueberries, half an orange, half a lemon, a couple of carrots, some ginger, and a couple of kale leaves just because they like to feel “healthy”, as Taylor puts it.  These always are so sweet and the kids down them.

Super sweet and kid friendly, by adding grapes and blueberries and less carrots, you get a really pretty purple color which the kids go nuts for.

carrot-and-cucumber-juice Carrot Cucumber Juice (my own concoction)
2 carrots cut up
1 baby seedless cucumber cut up
1/2 an orange peel and pith removed
1 apple cut up
1 inch piece of ginger

A pure clean flavor is the best way to describe this one.  The cucumber really adds a fresh watery flavor and cuts the carrot flavor down  a bit.  If you add the cucumber first, then the carrots, the green color floats to the top making a really pretty and cool effect.
simple-green-juice

Simple Green Juice (GP’s recipe from It’s All Good)
5 kale leaves roughly chopped or torn stems removed
1 good size apple cut up
1 lemon peel and pith removed
1 inch piece of ginger

Quick and easy to make, this is definitely a very strong citrusy flavor so be mindful of that if you love or dislike citrus.  This blend doesn’t make a lot of juice because of the kale leaves, maybe 4-6 ounces on average.

banana-almond-smoothie

Banana Almond Smoothie (my own concoction)
1 cup sweetened almond milk
1 banana preferably frozen
1 tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp coconut oil
1 tbsp raw almonds
1/2 avocado
1 tsp chia seeds mixed in once blended

After a horrid recipe I followed in GP’s book, kale almond smoothie, I came up with this, using some advice from friends.  The avocado adds in your “greens” in a much smoother way, and the frozen banana adds a lot of sweet.  This is high in banana flavor, so beware if you don’t love bananas, like my daughter.  She won’t touch this one, but my son loves it.  I’ve drank this in the afternoon in replace of my snack  and it really filled me up.

As you can see, I’ve learned a lot in the past week but am by far no expert.  Would love some of your favorite juicing and smoothie recipes, please.

7 Pieces 7 Ways

It’s a rare day where I feel like I don’t have a thing to wear.  Not because I have thousands of items of clothing to choose from, but because in the last few years I’ve done a pretty decent job of only bringing things home with me which I truly love.  It is, on the other hand, a very rare day that I mix my outfits up much.  I, like most women, tend to fall in a rut and stick with the same combination of wardrobe pieces time and time again.  The same shirt with the same pair of jeans and the same dress with the same shoes.  It’s not that I’m a creature of habit, it’s just that when I find a winning combination, I fall in love hard and will often wear the same outfit many days in a row until it’s no longer clean.

So when Natalia of Ma Nouvelle Mode contacted me about doing a 7×7 wardrobe challenge, I was hesitant.   You mean I have to shake things up and stretch my creative styling muscles?  Eeeck.  I’m tired, I have a baby who won’t sleep, I don’t have time!  But I decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a go.  So what exactly is a 7×7 challenge?  Well basically, you choose 7 items from your wardrobe and create 7 different looks with those items, not including accessories.

For my 7 choices I tried to stick with summer time basics, without getting too California casual.  So I tried to incorporate an item or two that I might wear out at night, or someone could wear to work, as well as the really easy casual pieces.  My 7 items included: 1 pair of denim cut off jean shorts, 1 pair of bright pink palazzo pants, 1 white t-shirt, 1 colored blazer, 1 chambray shirt, and 2 different dresses.  I ended up pairing them with 6 different pairs of shoes and didn’t d much with regards to accessories.  I did play around with a few hats though, because hats are my favorite, especially in summer time.   IMG_5419 Look 1 featured the tee and cut offs and was more of a casual boho look. Well this is boho for me 😉 Bright pink lipstick and bright white tee. The trucker cap and studded sandals give it more of an edgy feel. This is in fact as much “edge” as I feel comfortable in. I wear this exact outfit quite a lot in fact, because it is so comfortable and easy to throw on. IMG_5431 Look number 2 features the same cut offs, but in a more put together sort of way. I added a chambray shirt with the collar popped, but to offset the denim on denim, I topped it off with a colored blazer. Finishing the more preppy look is a pair of classic white Converse and a straw hat. IMG_5439 This look is a departure for me with the wrap headband, but I wanted to have a little fun here and show that you could dress these pants up a bit if you wanted to. Last seen here and here, I have mainly worn them in a very casual way, but the addition of heels and a wide belt here, definitely dress up the look a bit more. IMG_5440 This next look features a rather “sexy” dress I bought on a whim last week, right before I went to a rock concert. I mainly wanted to see if there were other ways I could wear this dress so I just threw this look together, by layering the tee over it and wearing it as a skirt, and adding a belt and high wedge heels. It’s definitely not my favorite look, but this is an experiment after all. IMG_5453 While I usually want all my dresses to be able to work in both summer and winter, I might have to bite the bullet on this one and just wear it as originally intended, because the side slits are the stunner of the dress. I love this dress so much and feel amazing in it. Money is never better spent than on clothes, than on a great dress you feel beautiful in. IMG_5458 For my two final looks, I experimented with this very summery printed dress with a lace waistline. While this dress definitely feels a bit on the young side for me, because it’s for summer I feel like I can get away with a more youthful dress more than I normally would be able to. For the 6th look I just paired it back to my cute Zara chain flats. IMG_5465 And for the final 7th look, I threw on a chambray shirt and knotted it at the waist, and threw on some super casual leather huaraches from Olvera Street. IMG_5472 So what do you think, how did I do with the challenge? While not every look is my favorite, it was good to experiment and discover some new combos. I would definitely do look #7 again, as well as look #2. Which one is your favorite and least favorite?

If you found this challenge interesting and inspiring, I encourage you to try something similar (or exactly the same!) at home. Even if no one ever sees it but you, try on different combinations and take pictures of yourself to discover what you love and look good in. And if you’d like to see other ladies who’ve done the same challenge along with me, please check them out!

Gift Guide For A Guy – Summer Outfitting

My husband’s birthday always falls within 3 days of Father’s Day each year, and every year I’m sort of stumped as to what to get him.  He’s a tech geek, but everything he would want for himself he either already owns or just buys for himself because he can get wholesale prices, which takes the fun out of ever buying him something “techy” when I know he could get it for himself much cheaper.

IMG_7210 While I admittedly could do a much better job of planning ahead and ordering him a sentimental photo book or framed prints, I just never seem to be at that stage in my life, so I usually resort to a last minute trip to the mall the day before his birthday.  Horribly impersonal, but also purely effective.  He never buys himself clothes, and because he wears the same clothes for work as he wears on the weekend, he inflicts a lot of wear and tear on his clothes, so to look presentable, he needs me to take care of him in that department.  I also then get to buy what I like and steer him towards a certain style of dress, so he doesn’t fall back into his routine of jeans and New Balance running shoes and a T-shirt.   IMG_7431

This year I bought him a couple of new clothing items earlier than usual because he was looking so darn ragged.  We both love what I’ve picked out so far, so I thought I’d share with you some of the styles he and I both love right now.  In terms of style, my husband is pretty simple.  A born and raised Californian, he definitely leans towards the very casual side.  He doesn’t identify with clothes that are too preppy or hipster, and prefers simple cargo shorts than flat front, but I have had some success getting him to go for the cleaner looking flat front short.  Getting him to wear tennies without socks was a bit of a challenge, but he’ll go for it if we’re going out to a nice lunch or dinner.  If he’s just hanging around here, he still resorts back to his sock and tennies routine ha!  These looks are clean, simple, yet still with a stylish edge that a “guy” would feel comfortable in.  So here we go, I present to you my personal choices, husband and guy approved, Summer Clothing Gift Guide For A Guy… Summer-Outfitting-For-Men

1. Quiksilver Tube Prison Short Sleeve Shirt in Brick – runs true to size and the quality is really nice.  He loves this shirt and wore it today on his flight to Utah.  He called it his new favorite shirt.  2. Gap Lived In Wash Gingham Shirt – runs true to size and is colorful without being too colorful. 3. Target Mossimo Tropical Button Down in Sailboat Print 4. Gap Surfwash Pinstripe Short in Bright Red – he’s 6’1″ and these fit him really well, just above his knee as you can see in the photo above.  5. Mossimo Belted Flat Front Short in bright blue and he has them in a dark gray.  Very comfortable and he loves that they come with a belt because he must wear a belt every. single. day! 6. & 7. My 2 favorite shoes for him.  He loves the way they look but he has some foot problems so can’t wear them for long periods of time because they don’t have a lot of arch support.  He’s turning 39 this year.  Old man!  Both from Nordstrom.  Tretorn Slip On and Jack Purcell LTT Sneaker

So what are you planning to get your man or Dad for Father’s Day this year?  Any ideas you can share with me besides clothes, since I seem to have him covered there? 😉

Daily Style – The Importance Of Dresses

IMG_5400 Dress – Loft; Shoes – ShoeMint; Clutch – American Apparel; Cuff – Vintage

When you’ve been writing about clothes and style for a few years, you start to wonder if you’ve ever repeated the same topic of tips or bits of advice. Well, I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about dresses before, but in my opinion this bit of advice is so important it’s worth repeating: if you find a cute dress you’re drawn to on sale, buy it, even if you don’t have an immediate need for it. IMG_5373 I came across this dress a few weeks back at the Loft and it was on sale for $22. I loved it, even if it was a little bit tight at the hips, and figured after a few more weeks or months it would fit just perfect. While it is still a bit snug, for the most part it fits well and I love the way I feel in it. It’s almost impossible to be in a bad mood wearing such bright colors and cheerful flowers. And the best part is, I have a dress I love, just waiting for me in my closet, the next time I need it. IMG_5379 Hoping your weekend was great, and sorry to be so brief today. I’ve got a baby on my lap as I type this, who I’m trying desperately to keep happy . I’m sure many of you can relate. Have a great day and see you back tomorrow! IMG_5397 IMG_5401

New Favorite T-Shirt

t2 Having spent a brief time in my career working at a “designer” t-shirt company, I became a little picky about my t’s.  Before, a t-shirt was a t-shirt, and I didn’t concern myself much with fit, softness or quality.  Turns out all those things do matter if you want to look and feel good in your t-shirt, but it also turns out you don’t have to always spend a fortune to achieve good results.

Nina Garcia in her book lists James Perse and Hanes as her two top favorites, both polar opposites in the price spectrum.  What I’ve come to discover though, is that it’s not so much the brand or price that will guarantee a great t-shirt, but the t-shirt itself.  Some brands are hit and miss, and while I used to think I could never find a t-shirt or tank at Target that fit well to save my life, they recently launched a fantastic over sized tank that is so similar to a James Perse one I own it’s scary.  For a while the Gap was falling short as well, but after picking up a few things for Art for summer, I discovered this t-shirt a couple of weeks ago and am in love. t1

The fit is a bit over sized but not in a sloppy, Olsen twins way, and has a thick band at the arms that really flatters.  I hate cap sleeves and often find that some t-shirts’s sleeves are either too short, similar to a cap sleeve, or too long, so that you almost feel the need to roll them.  The wash has made them super soft and cozy, and they come in a bunch of great colors and patterns.  Oh!  And they’re 40% off this week!  It’s called the Gap Market T and I’m wearing a size Medium, which is what I normally wear at the Gap, so I’d say it fits true to size. t3

The Gap actually has a bunch of new styles in T-Shirts right now and I’m meaning to get in there and do a dressing room post trying them all on.  To find the time.  Laura of Ascot Friday recommends this one, but too bad it only comes in a couple of colors.  And since this new over sized trend seems to be sticking around for a while, I was thinking of doing a post showing how to choose and wear over sized tees and dresses, but wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested.  Any takers?

And since we’re discussing post topics, are there any in particular you’d like me to cover as we head into Summer?  I’m all ears!

The Land Of Nod Opens In Southern California!

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Land of Nod, but all my opinions are my own. #PMedia #NODinCA
IMG_4879 It’s been really inspiring to see the evolution of The Land Of Nod over the last few years.  I received my first Land Of Nod catalog soon after having Taylor, and like many, admired all of the pretty pages filled with magical kid’s rooms and beautiful nurseries.  Picture perfect, and styled just right, the catalog for me was aspirational, yet attainable at the same time.  I kept old issues of it laying around the house to refer to whenever I needed a dose of inspiration.

IMG_4881 Over the last few years though, the brand has evolved into more than just perfect rooms and pretty pictures.  Through their partnerships with small, independent artists and artisans, to their creative set displays, to their very down to earth depictions of real life via their social media channels, and their most recent catalog cover featuring the photography of blogger Kelle Hampton, The Land Of Nod has become a brand that I deeply respect and admire.  And the very cool thing about them is that they’ve transcended the “kid’s only” realm, in that many of their products that could live in any area of your home.  Can you tell I love them?  Well, my love reached an all time high when I was invited to come to their pre-grand opening party last week, of their first California store in South Coast Plaza.  For once Orange County gets something before LA.  You don’t know how satisfying that is for those of us living in Orange County ha! IMG_4876 IMG_4870

The store did not disappoint.  I expected it to be larger in scale, but was actually really excited to find that the store had taken over the old Loft space, so that it was a much more intimate, manageable size.  I get overwhelmed in those giant 2 story home stores.  The size was just right.  The store is set up into zones; girl rooms towards the front right of the store, nurseries to the left.  In the middle of the store were all the boy’s room displays, and towards the back you find the artwork, storage bins, and lots of play toys.  I love how easy the layout of the store was to navigate.  Displays, fixtures and artwork was creative, funky, eclectic, and I love how they mix vintage finds into their displays, making them feel even more authentic.  Every item from the furniture to the bedding was tagged with easy to read price labels. IMG_4873 IMG_4871

The entire staff was welcoming and so down to earth and easy to talk to.  I had so much fun getting to know them, seeing old friends and meeting new ones, that I didn’t even really spend much time shopping at all.  Hayden and I went back today to look around in the calm of the store, and I decided to bring the one piece home that definitely isn’t the most practical of items, but definitely the most loved.  Syd could really use some new sheets, and I still want to redo Taylor’s room, but right now I’m thinking the summer could use a little bit of fun, brought to us in part by a very cool teepee. IMG_4867

We made the kids stay inside while we set it up, and when they ran out to see their surprise, they completely freaked out.  Both my kids at 6 and 8, are still very into imaginative play, which I am so thankful for.  They can entertain themselves for hours playing dress up, role playing, making movies, building forts, you name it.  Within 10 minutes of us having that thing set up, they had brought all their blankets and pillows out to the teepee and begged for some privacy.  They soon became annoyed that I was taking pictures when they had important teepee business to conduct. IMG_5119 IMG_5145 IMG_5130

With 5 days left of school, and no more homework to be done, we let them be, and didn’t say a word when they brought out every light saber and glow up stick and flashlight we own, to tell stories once the sun set.  Bedtime was pushed back further and further until finally, at 9:15, they both walked in and said they were turning into icicles (dramatic Southern California wimpy kids!).  Eventually the teepee will live in Hayden’s room since it will fit in perfectly with the theme, and he has the most space, but I love that it easily collapses down and can be transported with ease.  I see the teepee making an appearance at the beach this Summer to help baby Hayden find some shade. Thanks Land Of Nod for being such a cool company, making such cool things and introducing us to even cooler products.  And thanks especially, for helping to make my kid’s summer a bit more magical. IMG_5183 IMG_5211

If you don’t have a store near you, you can find the Land Of Nod online, as well as on Instagram, which I highly recommend you follow.  They post the coolest behind the scenes images, the best brand Instagram I follow by far in fact.  They’re also really fun to follow on Twitter and always tweet back to answer questions or just to say thanks for the shout outs.  You can also follow them on Pinterest for lots of inspiring finds.

Gwyneth Made Me Do It

book

Let me be clear and start by letting you all know that I have a love-hate relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow, which leans more towards strong disdain/hate more than the love part.  Not for reasons you would probably guess though.  I’ve loved her as an actress for many years, and like most of the world, thought she was nothing but perfection when she sweetly accepted her Oscar in “the pink dress“.  No one can doubt her pure natural beauty, even if you think she’s too thin, too boyish, too flat chested, whatever. The woman is a beauty and at age 40, she looks much less tired than I do.

But after an initial love affair with the goopster, it became clear that Gwyneth and I didn’t have a whole lot in common, as she began to appear on more and more talk shows and more and more magazine interviews.  My disdain for Gwyneth reached epic proportions when she appeared on Conan with her legs all oiled up, talking about how she had just arrived home from a trip to some remote, far-flung island that clearly, only millionaires could ever afford traveling to, and she paused and looked at the audience, and smugly instructed them that “You all have to go there!”  As if.

I certainly don’t have a problem with affluent people, and I don’t have a problem with people born into wealth.  But when you are so clearly detached from reality and how the world actually works, that you assume everyone is able to live the same lifestyle as you Gwyneth, you come across as not just affluent but as delusional and entitled.  There are links upon links which I can refer you to, which shows the goopsters detachment from reality, but I’ll spare you, because I’m sure many of you get the picture.

So you may have heard that GP has a new book out titled It’s All Good.  I had no intent of touching it, until I read this review, and I gotta admit, it got me curious (clearly).  It’s subtitled Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good and Feel Great.   Well heck, I want to look good and I definitely want to feel great.  At 37, I’ve been feeling exhausted lately, which no amount of rest or sleeping in can seem to cure.  My dark circles seem to be getting more pronounced, and I’ve been experiencing chronic back pain that is some days so debilitating I can barely sleep.   I work out on a regular basis, I overall eat sort of healthy (but could always do better), and I try to take care of my skin.  But I was still looking and feeling older than I ever imagined feeling at 37.  So I asked my Dad to track down the book at the library for me, because I refused to give her any of my money.

30 pages in, I have to admit that I sort of liked it.  I actually really liked it. Loved it in fact.

Let me warn you in advance, if you are already slightly annoyed with GP, you will definitely at times, be annoyed with her in this book.

Gwyneth-Paltrow's-Quiona-Granola enjoying my breakfast in the garden, aka my backyard

Evidence A: The book jacket says “While she may not eat this way every day of her busy life, this is the food Paltrow turns to when she needs to revitalize or lose weight…and now you can too!”  First off, when the f*%k did GP ever need to lose weight?  That kind of sentence right there is why people in general are usually annoyed with thin people.

Evidence B: In her introduction, Gwyneth writes, “One sunny afternoon in London, in the spring of 2011, I thought – without sounding overly dramatic – that I was going to die.  I had just served lunch in the garden at home…”  Sorry GP, but you most definitely sound overly dramatic, especially as you read on and see that she was having a migraine.  Just a regular old migraine, not some scary heart attack or anything.  And she was serving lunch in “the garden”.  Do you mean your backyard?  She goes on to tell us she ordered up a battery of expensive tests (and you should too!), and equated a lot of her physical woes on the fact that she had been spending the last year eating too many french fries and red wine.   If you’ve known GP’s antics for as long as I have, are we really supposed to believe that the health crazed mom of 2 really went on some wild french fry eating bender for  a year?  Give me a break Gwyneth.

Evidence C: In one of the recipe instructions for a kids meal, she writes, “See the recipe for Homemade Gluten-Free Dumpling Wrappers on page 229, or find premade ones in the grocery store – we know they’re usually made with wheat, but considering that they’re a vehicle for quinoa and veggies, we’re pretty okay letting a little gluten fly here!”  Oh Gwyneth, you’re so easygoing and lighthearted!    Thanks for giving us allowance to feed our kids a little gluten!

Evidence D: One recipe is noted as being “quite a bit of work to make”.  You told me the recipes were easy Gwyneth!  Your book jacket even says so!  You lied GP, you lied.

So why in the hell am I still reading the book?  And why would you want to?  Well here’s why. juice

I do believe that food has the power to change us, both physically and mentally.  It’s as simple as when I eat well I feel well, and when I eat bad, I feel bad.  I am very sensitive to sugar and experience such a sugar hangover and crash the day after over-indulging that I suffer from a raging headache and mood swings all day.  When I eat too much processed foods I have a low energy and my digestion gets all out of whack for days.  My own body tells me food effects me, and science does too.  I believe clean eating goes well beyond just portion control and eating your fruits and veggies, though, and do believe there is indeed a science to it, based on your body’s needs.  Ever read the Eat Right For Your Blood Type Diet book?  Certain foods, no matter how healthy we think they to be, can in fact have different negative effects on your body.  If you believe that food allergies exist, then this type of science follows along the same lines (somewhat).

I am overall, poorly educated when it comes to true clean eating.  I have wanted a crash course for a long time now, but was overwhelmed by the dizzying array of information out there.   Paleo, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, the list goes on.  I would like to try out baking with rice flour, but I haven’t a clue what to do.  I’d love to try and eliminate a little bit of dairy from my diet, but where do I start?  This book gives a very simplistic crash course on eliminating some of these items for your everyday cooking.  All recipes are virtually dairy free and gluten free, and many are vegan.  While my hardcore vegan for life friends may in fact think the recipes are “lame” (Laura!), for a rookie, I’m finding them overall very mountable.

The content covers a wide range of diets and ways of eating.  To be honest, I don’t diet, but rather try to eat a well balanced diet as much as I can, and I think the many diet plans out there are overwhelming and a little overboard.  But whatever type of “diet” or eating system you follow, these recipes fit in with most of them.  Gwyneth says so.

Her co-author Julia Turshen keeps the book real and normal, not just a book dedicated to GP.  Gwyneth’s co-author’s voice is real and authentic, and her spirit shines through in the photos of her throughout the book.  She seems like the kind of gal I’d like to hang with.

Good little tips sprinkled throughout.  Did you know that if you soak almonds in water for half a day, they are easier to digest and absorb the great benefits into your system?  Neither did I!

chicken

Braised Chicken With Green Olives and Lemon, served alongside Mark Bittman’s Stewed Vegetables With Beans and Quinoa

So what about the actual recipes?  Well, I’ve only tried 3 so far, and so far so good.  The braised chicken with green olives I made last night was tasty and overall easy to prepare.  I was surprised she had my fry the chicken in EVOO I’ll admit, and the rest of the recipe instructions weren’t anything ground breaking, in fact I’ve made an almost identical chicken before, sans the green olives.  But it was good and at her urging, I bought an organic chicken for the first time and it was in fact very beautiful.

The simple green juice was indeed simple and delicious.   Only calling for 4 ingredients, it is the least complex but best tasting juice I’ve ever had, and I’ve had  a lot of concoctions!

I made the Quinoa Granola With Olive Oil + Maple Syrup last night and ate it this morning, and HOLY SMOKES, it is fantastic.  The kids gobbled it up this morning as a cereal and I ate it for dessert with goat’s milk yogurt (look at me!), and this morning as cereal with almond milk.  I couldn’t find quinoa flakes (GP says she’s allergic to oats, who is actually allergic to oats?!), but I used my coach’s oats because they’re so flaky and it came out great.

I plan to try more recipes in the following 4 weeks, before the book is due back to the library, and I even plan to follow the 7 day cleanse menu plan to see if I do in fact look good and feel even better.  I’ll keep you abreast of my adventures with Gwyneth, if you’re interested, and will definitely be posting some more of the recipes I try on Instagram, so please follow along if you’re interested.  I’ll use the hashtag #gwynethmademedoit

Also, because a couple of you asked for the green juice recipe, here you go:

The Best Green Juice
5 large leaves of kale, ribs discarded leaves roughly chopped
1 lemon, zest and pith removed
1 large apple, roughly chopped
A 1 inch piece of fresh ginger
1 sprig of fresh mint

Push all ingredients through a juice or in a powerful blender. If you’re blending, add 1/2 cup water. Juice/blend and enjoy.
