Back To School Shopping Made Easy

target2 Sometimes I like to make things more complicated than they need to be. I’m sitting here with a case of writer’s block, trying to figure out some really ingenious way to tell you about our back to school shopping trip to Target. I want to make it engaging, creative, and tell you a story from a different angle, like you’ve never heard before. But when you break it down, it’s really quite simple and basic. Target is successful because they make shopping fun, easy, and stylish, and you don’t really need me to tell you that, because you ladies out there already know that. It’s why Target Does It Again is so successful, because they’ve just confirmed what we’ve all been thinking all along; Target does it right, every single time. You may not need me to tell you how great Target is, but I can at least share with you why we love them so much. target5 As I told you last week, we had about an hour to get some school shopping done before we left for vacation, in between VBS, a play date, work, packing and a doctor’s appointment. It seemed like quite the impossible task, but I have what you call Ninja skills and I knew that if we really focused we could do it. When Syd saw the Stylagram that Target created, featuring the Darth Vader lunch pack, I knew we had to pick that up. Beyond that we needed to pick up a couple of pairs of jeans, some shirts, socks and undies, and snacks. My kids think shopping for snacks is just about as much fun as shopping for toys. target6 First stop though were to grab some Slurpees and a bag of popcorn. We headed to the back to school section in search of the lunch pail and discovered that it was already sold out. The Target girl working in the department was really helpful though and helped me track it down at another local store and even called to make sure it was there and put it on hold for me.   Syd loves workbooks and when he saw the 1st Grade prep book, he declared he had to have it so he could be ready for 1st grade.

target4 Once we were properly stocked up on snacks, supplies and such, we headed over to the clothing department where Syd was given just one rule; he had to pick out at least 1 collared shirt.  The child despises collars, but we do need to wear them every now and then,  so between a couple of Star Wars shirts and some green skinny jeans, he picked out  a collared shirt we both found acceptable.

target7 Clothes, supplies, snacks and slurpees for 2 kids in less than an hour, in and out.  It was easy, simple and enjoyable.  The kids are excited as they’re going to be about heading back to school, with new purchases patiently waiting in their rooms, ready to get some use very soon.  Going back to school isn’t necessarily our favorite thing to look forward to in our household, but at least we didn’t have to take too much time out of our last few days of summer to get ready for it.  Thanks Target for helping a mom out, yet again.

Inspired Style – Denim + Heels

So many lovely, relatable images of style inspiration have been showing up in my Pinterest feed lately, that I wish I had more places to go. The relaxed, yet busy days of summer are still in full swing, and besides a casual date night here and there, most of these looks call for heels or wedges, something I’m really inspired to wear lately, but just aren’t practical for everyday wear when toting around a baby.

Something else many of these looks also have in common are slim fitting and or distressed denim. Since I’m finally back to my pre-pregnancy size, although still not weight, I bought a new pair of Paige denim skinny jeans which I’ve been wearing the heck out of. A new closet acquisition always helps to get the rusty style wheels in motion. If I have the time, (oh it’s always about the time!), I would replicate all of these looks and pose for you in my backyard, just for fun. Maybe I’ll just have to do that.

Kids Got Style

kids-got-style I’ve shared with you all how much say my kids have in their own style choices in a post I wrote a few months back. Some days it’s a curse, but most days I have come to see it as a blessing. The other night I dropped the kids off for a sleepover at a friend’s house and I told her, “Don’t be alarmed when Syd gets dressed in jeans and a long sleeve shirt tomorrow morning.” It being August and 90 degrees out and all. Indeed, my kids have their own tastes and preferences and I’ve come to embrace it because at the end of the day, I’d rather have them care about how they presents themselves to the world than not, especially Syd.

We’ll soon be leaving on a trip to visit my aunt and uncle, and before we leave we need to get the last bit of our school shopping done. As I said in Monday’s post, I don’t plan to coordinate any day-long excursions to the mall. Between VBS, a Star Wars play date with friends, packing for our trip, and me trying to squeeze in some work, I have a babysitter booked today to come stay with Hayden for 2 hours so I can take the kids shopping. I’ve already downed 2 cups of coffee in preparation for the big day ahead. Naturally we’ll be hitting up Target to get supplies, and a couple of new outfits.

To kick off the new school year, Target has created an online event to celebrate real kid’s style. They’re looking for us to show off our kid’s unique sense of style on Instagram between August 7th-12th by posting a picture of your kid dressed as they like, doing anything they love. Basically what you already do on a daily basis anyhow. Tag it with the #kidsgotstyle hashtag and mention @target. You and your kid could win a customized Stylagram, which is a cute, handcrafted postcard of the Instagram, plus tailor-made outfit inspiration specific to your kid’s unique sense of style. The Stylagram could include clothes, shoes, school supplies, backpacks, etc. Take a look at the hashtag and you’ll get the idea, as there are already lots of photos uploaded and a couple of Stylagrams that Target has already uploaded. We’re supposed to be getting Syd’s later today and I can’t wait to see what they choose for him. More than anything, I’m curious if they’ll be able to predict his style and read his personality from the Instagram I uploaded. And because Target does everything with style, they created a super cute video to give details of the event, which you can watch below.

So to recap:
– Take a picture of your kid doing what they love, which could just be being silly, and shows off their unique sense of style
– Upload it to Instagram with the hashtag #kidsgotstyle and @target
– Sit back and marvel at how cute your kids are, and how very, very soon, you’ll have some peace and quiet again once school starts

Daily Style – Camo Skinnies

IMG_7781 I can tell these camo skinnies are going to be my go-to pant for the rest of summer and going into fall. Neutral in color/print, they work back to stripes, solid colors, chambray, even a small floral print, very easily. And they look great with flip-flops, sandals, wedges and boots. This pair from Banana Republic fit great and I was able to snatch them up for 40% off. I like that the waistband is generous so I don’t feel like my muffin top is trying to escape. I’ve heard the camos from the Gap are great, and some are a fan of this pair from Urban Outfitters too. Last fall I didn’t fall for the faux leather leggings, but camos are a trend I can easily jump on board with. 4 Yummy Drinks I’m Making With My Vitamix

I recently acquired a Vitamix Blenderinstead of a juicer after watching the Vitamix dude make a mighty wow-inspiring presentation at my local Coscto. I had my heart set on using my birthday money to buy a nice juicer, but when I saw his presentation I just couldn’t deny that for now, a blender was the way to go. If you want a breakdown of how I came to this life-altering decision, you can read my post here on Babble. Anyhoo, I’ve used my Vitamix Blendereveryday since I brought it home, and wanted to share a few of my favorite drinks I’ve concocted up so far. These are all iPhone pictures so apologies for that, but I find that somehow the drinks are getting drunk faster than I can pause to run and get the good camera. You all get the drift though, I hope!

Strawberry Basil Slushie
I call this one a slushie rather than a juice or smoothie because it has a bit of a smooth icy texture, which I found mighty refreshing! It’s really quick to whip up, and the basil keeps it from becoming too sweet. strawberry-basil-slushie 1 cup frozen strawberries + 1 cup fresh strawberries – the combination of the two helps to make the drink cold and fresh tasting
1/3 cup of fresh basil leaves (more or less depending on how strong of a basil flavor you want. 1/3 cup will give it a distinct basil flavor without being overpowering)
4-5 mint leaves
1/2 navel orange peel removed (this will cut down on the bitterness that sometimes arises with frozen strawberries)
1 tbsp of raw or 1 tsp standard honey
1 tsp of chia seeds (just to add some extra goodness in there)
1/4 cup water + 1/2 cup ice (mix both in a measuring cup and just pour right in)
Combine in blender and puree till nice and smooth.

Cucumber Basil Fauxjito
I know mojitos don’t actually have cucumbers or basil in them, but this drink still reminds me of one for some reason. cucumber-basil-1
2 small seedless cucumbers or 1 English cucumber (important that they are not regular cucumbers as those have a stronger flavor)
1-1.5 lime(s) peels removed (depending on how tart you like your drinks)
1/3 cup fresh basil leaves
4-5 mint leaves
1 tbsp of raw honey or a splash of raw honey simple syrup
1/4 cup water + 1/2 cup ice (mix both in a measuring cup and just pour right in)
2 slices of cucumber dipped in coarse sea salt, or Maldon’s if you have it on hand – the garnish is the cat’s meow in this drink
Combine in blender and puree till nice and smooth. *Adapted from It’s All Good

Super Light Green Smoothie For Two
I made this drink the other morning for my husband and I and he said it was his favorite by far. This combo is really nice and light, and definitely sweet but not overpowering. This is a great starter juice for someone who is not sure of the whole green juice thing, and is super great for kids and babies. You can’t go wrong with this one. cucumber-basil
1 banana (I prefer mine really ripe so they’re sweet)
1/2 orange + 1/2 lemon peels removed
1 inch slice of ginger
1 apple cut up
1 inch slice of pineapple skin removed
2 heaping handfuls of spinach
1/2 cup water + 1 cup of ice (mix both in a measuring cup and just pour right in)
Combine in blender and puree till nice and smooth.

Whole Fruit Margarita
I got this recipe from the Vitamix book, and my friend Miranda and I both agreed that it was a little weak sauce, so we tweaked it a bit and came up with this version, which is definitely better. whole-fruit-margarita
1/4 cup water
12 ounces of tequila
4 ounces of triple sec
1 navel orange peeled
2 limes peeled
1 lemon peeled
3 tbsp raw honey simple syrup
6 cups of ice
Combine in blender and puree till nice and smooth. Salt your rim, pour, and enjoy the healthiest margarita you’ve ever had!

A few friends and readers have asked how I come up with these concoctions, and it’s just a matter of experimenting, and thinking of the foods and flavors you know to complement each other when eaten whole. Basil + strawberry is a match made in heaven, but if you just tried to blend these two up, chances are the smoothie would taste a little strange.

Just keep in mind a few things when coming up with your recipes:
– Apples will add subtle sweetness
– Oranges will add tangy sweetness
– Lemons are stronger in flavor than limes, so if you just want a bit of sourness, add a lime over a lemon
– Water will dilute the juices a bit so they go down smoother
– Ice will make them more smoothie and slushy in consistency
– Use raw honey or even a natural sweetener like zylitol if a recipe calls for sugar or agave (read this article about agave, and how it’s not really that much better for you than refined table sugar. If you have a Vitamix Blender, the cookbook that comes with your machine calls for agave all over the place)

I hope you like these recipes, and let me know if you have any questions!

When Going Back To School Is Tough

IMG_5644 It’s happening already, despite me being ready for it. As I’m browsing Pinterest at night, I keep seeing pins pop up telling me how to make the back-to-school transition easier, how to get organized, how to throw a party to celebrate, how to be prepared, and to be honest, I’m not ready for it and neither are my kids. It’s like Christmas decorations popping up the day after Halloween. I just want to say, can’t we enjoy summer just a little bit longer? My nieces and nephews start back this week, and so I understand the time has come for some of you out there, and for those of you who aren’t yet going back, you still find the best way to start the school year is to prepare. But I’m one of those moms who has learned that the best way to help transition my kids for back to school, is to do as little in advance to prepare as possible. It’s worthwhile to note too, that since we live across the street from our school, back-to-school is an ever-present reminder, always looming in the background, making it another reason why preparing little helps a lot.

My kids don’t naturally love school. Don’t get me wrong, they love to learn and love seeing their teachers and friends everyday; my daughter is a voracious reader and my son thrives off of routine, and once they get going into the school year, they pretty much go everyday with ease. But they are both homebodies by nature who sadly, love to sleep in. They have an extremely hard time for the first several weeks, not only moving back into the daily routine of the school year, but just simply being away from home, from their rooms, from their baby brother, from me. No amount of preparation helps make this easier. So after preparing like crazy the first two years my daughter was in school, I’ve learned that for both of them, and for me, preparing the least helps them the most. What does that look like? If you’ve got kids like mine, here’s how I’ve learned to do it.
IMG_6006
For starters, we stay on with the summer fun till the very last minute.
We keep their bedtime close to normal as much as possible during summer so we don’t have to worry about that transition much. This allows us to go on with summer fun as usual even the weekend before they start back. Because we always start school on a Wednesday, it leaves the weekend open to continue with fun activities and then allows us to slowly ease back into the idea of back to school on Monday and Tuesday. This year we’ll be celebrating Hayden’s 1st birthday the weekend before they start back, something they’re very much looking forward to. They’ll be so busy celebrating with friends and family they won’t even have a chance to focus on the woes of going back to school.

No Big Deal
While I want to get my kids pumped up for a new school year, with kids like mine, I’ve learned that it’s best to treat back to school time as no big deal, just another thing we do. That means no huge celebrations and parties, no elaborate all-day shopping trips, no last big hurrah. While this approach may sound counter-intuitive, it works for us. If we do something too fun right before school starts, and go out with a big bang, my kids will then focus on how fun summer is versus school, and it will just make the transition harder. Almost like a last supper, if you will; “Have fun now kids because once school starts, it’s all down hill here from here.” I know this approach doesn’t work for everyone, but for my kids it does.

Focus On What They Do Love
There are some things my kids do love to do that involve back to school prep, so I focus on those and do them close to our start date. They both get new backpacks this year so we’ll go get frozen yogurt and pick out some new packs and lunch sacks soon. They both love picking out new shoes and especially clothes, so that will be another fun excursion to help get them as excited as possible. But I’ll keep it low-key, and keep the excursions short so we don’t interfere with the days of summer too much.

The Night Before & Day Of
The night before, we’ll go get dinner at their favorite restaurant and just enjoy some time together as a family. We’ll say a prayer for a great school year, pick out their first day of school clothes and just hope for the best. Some years, tears are involved, some years there aren’t. We keep it positive and upbeat and talk about all the exciting things they’ll be learning this year. The morning of, I always sneak out early and pick up a dozen balloons to fill their rooms so they wake up to something fun. I make them a special breakfast and they’re off for the day.

End Of Week Celebrations
I save a fun celebration for the end of our first week. Nothing elaborate, but I make a congratulations sign and hang it in our house, we have movie night and we plan a fun outing with cousins or friends for the weekend. We really emphasize that our life together is fun and great and just because school has started, the fun doesn’t have to end, it just has to move to the weekend. This helps tremendously and keeps them upbeat and positive. Sunday nights usually remain tough for a few weeks, but eventually we all get into the swing of things and the new school routine becomes our normal.

I also want to note that behind the scenes, I do prepare myself by getting organized in the office so when the school paperwork starts rolling in, I can handle it. I also keep our schedules open for a couple of weeks during the actual school week, to allow them plenty of down-time, and even allow for impromptu play dates with school friends if the opportunity comes up. It may not work for everyone, but it works for us. What does your back to school prep routine look like? Anything like ours, or completely different?

Making Your Skincare Routine Work For You

This is the final post in the healthy skincare series I’ve been writing for the past 6 weeks, thanks to Aveeno. To see all the posts on how I’ve been adapting my skincare routine, and different tips to help get me through summer, coming out the other side with healthy skin, visit this link.
Aveeno Product
For today’s post, let’s talk about what your daily moisturizer should be doing for you. Our lives seem to only be getting busier, and so why not get the most out of your skincare routine by really making the product work to your benefit? I have very dry, yet sensitive skin, so when I find a moisturizer I like, I tend to get attached and become very loyal to it, until it no longer works. Last year, I noticed that the moisturizer I had been using for about 10 years seemed to just be sitting on top of my skin. I asked a friend, a beauty guru if you will, and she recommended I switch and try something new, and what she recommended was Aveeno Positively Radiant. I was really worried my face would revolt, but a year later, not only has it not protested the switch, it seems to be much better off because of it. I also switched to the body moisturizer at the time, since I loved the way it smelled (or didn’t smell rather, on Hayden). I figured, if I was going to make the switch, why not go for a product overhaul.

After making the switch, here’s what I’ve found your skincare moisturizer should be doing for you.

– Obviously, it should moisturize. It should leave your skin feeling hydrated, but not oily and greasy. I know a moisturizer is a good fit for me if my dry skin no longer feels tight, and when I apply my foundation, it elevates it by providing a base for a fresh, dewy look. If it interferes with your foundation application by leaving your skin feeling like an oil slick, it’s not working and you need to say adios.

– It should calm down irritations by acting in a natural, gentle way to soothe skin.

– It should provide some added benefit beyond just moisturizing. It should provide sun protection via SPF, or should help to smooth out wrinkles or even out skin tone. The claims don’t need to be over-the-top or radical, but I like to know my moisturizer is doing a bit more than just making my skin feel soft.

– Lastly, yet still very important, it should enhance the rest of your skincare routine. Since daily moisturizer is the last thing you put on, it should work with the rest of the products you’re using in your routine. It shouldn’t mask the lovely scent of your body wash, or clog your pores, after your face wash worked to get them clean. And monetarily speaking, it should work within your budget so that you can afford to actually buy a skincare routine which includes a face wash, day and night time moisturizer, and an eye cream if you worry about crow’s feet like I do.

If your skincare routine, and most specifically your daily moisturizer is working for you, it should be a quick, easy process that leaves you feeling refreshed and ready for the day, not burdened at the thought of having to do it. Most mornings I can’t really get moving until I’ve splashed water across my face, applied my moisturizer, put my contacts in and brushed my teeth. It wakes me up and gets me going, more so than coffee ever can. Just like clothes should work for you, not against you, so should be the case with your beauty products.

So do you think your skincare routine and your moisturizer are working for you or against you? Is it time to try something new?

Thanks to Aveeno for allowing me to speak on their behalf through this series, adn thank you readers for joining along for the past 6 weeks. It’s been a pleasure to work with a brand I love and already use on a daily basis!

DIY Studded Flip Flops

How-To-make-a-pair-of-studded-flip-flops I’m so happy to finally share this DIY with you, just in time for the trail end of Summer!  Even if you don’t live in California, where we can wear flip flops almost every day of the year, you’ve still got at least a month of good sunshine weather to make this project worth your while.  I get a little too excited when I start in on a DIY project.  I am definitely lacking in the patient, thorough, prepping department.  When my studs finally arrived in the mail, the day before we were leaving on a 4 day vacation to Big Bear, I decided to DIY these on the fly even though I really didn’t have any time to.  I rushed through because I wanted them done NOW, and as it turns out, that wasn’t a good thing.  We hadn’t been in Big Bear no less than an hour when the studs started falling off.  So while this is essentially a VERY easy DIY, take the 5 extra minutes to prep and do it right so you won’t have studly woes like I did. DIY-StuddedFlipflopssupplies To start, gather your supplies.  I love Havaianas slims and knew that even if the DIY didn’t pan out, at least I’d have a good pair of flip flops that fit great, but feel free to get whichever pair of plain flip flops you like!  Buy a pack of 10mm flat back studs.  I ordered mine from Etsy, but you can find these on Amazon too.  Grab a tube of E6000, a paper towel and some toothpicks, and you’re good to go! DIY-Studded-Flip-Flops For the prep, make sure you wipe down your flip flop straps thoroughly with rubbing alcohol, even if they’re brand new!  This is the first place I went wrong.  Once they’re clean and dry, start applying your studs.  It is very important when working with E6000 that you work fast.  So squeeze a tiny amount out at a time and rub a small dab on the back of each stud.  If the glue starts getting rubbery, to where you can’t rub it on the back of the stud with ease, and it seems to just sort of glop on, squeeze out a fresh bit and use it.  It should feel like very thick hot glue, in that it is pliable and shiny.  If you use glue that’s been allowed to dry out, even just the tiniest bit, your studs will not stick.  So learn from me and be patient while applying these on!  I used 9 studs for each strap, and used a tiny sewing ruler to help me plot out my studs, but you don’t have to be as precise.  Make sure once you’ve applied all your studs you let them dry for at least a couple of hours before wear, and then with a toothpick, you can pick off any excess that squished out the sides of the studs during application.  That’s really all there is to it!   DIY-studded-flip-flops1 I love them so much and have been wearing them pretty much non stop.  The studs make them cute, but not cutesy, the way rhinestones or flowers maybe would.  They look great with my denim cut-offs and my cute Panama hat! DIY-your-own-studded-flip-flops IMG_7649 Let me know if you have any questions about working with E6000.  I’ve worked with it in the past, but this was definitely a learning process for me, since I was subjecting these to a lot of wear and tear.  Also, on a side note, the rhonestons I bought came pre-filled with adhesive that you could use a heating tool to melt and apply them directly on your surface, but since I didn’t have a good heating tool, I decided to use the epoxy.  I imagine if you do have that right tool, this would be great because the studs would then lay a bit more flat.  I don’t mind the small bit of lift though on mine.  Have fun and enjoy!

Daily Style – How To Wear the Oversized Look part 1

IMG_7568 Really what the title of this post should say is how to wear the over-sized look, and still look feminine, but that was too long. I’ve never been much of a super tight fitting clothes kind of gal, and now 3 kids later, I’m most definitely not. I’ve always preferred looser, more flowy clothes that can hide a “multitude of sins”, and don’t require a pair of Spanx, but I also like to feel feminine and never boyish. It’s a tough balance to achieve sometimes, but with the right pieces, it can definitely be done.
IMG_7581 blouse & pants – h&m; shoes – shoemint; clutch – american apparel; necklace – ann taylor loft
Because the over-sized look is very in this year, and continues to be a trend for Fall, I thought I’d do a series of posts on this look, starting with this dressier look, and including casual t-shirts, loose dresses and voluminous pants. Plus, I’ve sort of been slacking on the daily style posts these last few weeks, so this will be a good challenge for me to flex my styling muscles. I hope this series provides you with some inspiration, and helps you start thinking differently about loose and baggy clothes. IMG_7575 For a dressier over-sized look that you could wear on a date night out to a nice restaurant, a cocktail party, or even to a casual summer wedding, start with some sort of woven fabrication including silk, rayon, a poly/silk blend, anything that has the look and/or feel of a more expensive fabric and isn’t just a plain brushed cotton.  These printed pants are made of a rayon blend and are very lightweight and have a lot of movement, the top is a cheap poly blend but is made to resemble a crepe silk almost, and although is a bit more of a structured feel, it still moves when I walk and a breeze kicks up.  Choosing a similar color or tonal color palette, as in this case, all blues, gives a more sophisticated feel to the outfit. IMG_7592

Why this look works
– The blouse, while loose towards the bottom, is still tailored in the bust area and around the neckline, so it gives the illusion of a somewhat fitted upper top, while the bottom flows out and gives it a very airy feeling. Although the back is long, the front is cut higher, keeping this blouse from looking just plain sloppy and more architectural. Not bad for $17.99

– The pants are nice and loose on top, but taper at the bottom just slightly and have an ankle band to give them a bit more structured look.

– Had the pants continued into a wide leg, and the blouse was as long in the front as the back, it would have looked sloppy and I would have looked like I was swimming in the outfit. I love the way the two pieces work so well together that I let the slight difference in shades of blue go. IMG_7584 Accessories Are Important
– I admit I’m not always the best accessorized woman out there, but with this look I felt it was important. The shoes give me lift and height, but their neutral color and slim lines keep the outfit looking feminine and lady-like as opposed to dowdy. A simple long statement necklace in neutral shades of silver and gray are the only bit of jewelry I needed and was enough to highlight the blouse but not overpower the whole outfit.

So what do you think?  Do you already love the over-sized look, or are you not a fan and prefer your outfits to be more body-conscious?
