Weekly Wrap Up – Syd’s Speech & Link Love

photo This week Syd’s speech therapist got to see a peek into what we deal with on a daily basis.  When finishing up his therapy session, and given the opportunity to get a toy from the chest, if he asked “may I please pick a toy?” and spoke in a “loud and proud” voice, he refused.  Because he just didn’t want to.  He sacrificed a shot at a cool new toy because he just didn’t want to have to say a few words.  Her jaw was on the floor and she admitted she had never seen an iron will on a kid so young.  Having seen this everyday for the past 6+ years, I felt vindicated and relieved that someone else got to witness it and I wasn’t just crazy.  Today, he got his toy and when I picked him up from his session he was in a happy, talkative mood, a completely different kid from the one I picked up 2 days prior.  Syd feels his feelings tremendously, always has and probably always will.  When he’s happy, he’s really happy, but when he’s low, he’s really low.  It’s hard to not know day to day how he will react to situations, but I try to stay happy and positive with the smiles and laughs he gives when he does, because they’re the best.

We started Syd in private speech therapy just over a month ago.  He’s been in speech and has had an IEP for over 2 years now, and some who know about this have asked how I knew I needed to take him to be evaluated.  More specifically, how did I know his speech was out of the “norm” of just regular kid speak.  The simple answer is, I just knew.  I knew for months and went against many people’s commentary that he spoke just fine and was just a kid.  When he was just over 3.5 years old I took him in to be evaluated through our district’s school speech therapist.  In California, you can have child evaluated through the state, for free, starting when they are as young as 2.  Since he was preschool age, I went through the school district’s therapist and she confirmed that he did qualify for therapy and his own IEP.  At the time, he was swapping letters, like g for d and viceversa, so that dog became God, and good became doog.  He had a pretty heavy lisp, and the thing that was most pronounced was his over-annunciation of words so that his speech was very slow and drawn out.  The therapist said that at 3 years old, he already knew that people couldn’t understand him, so he over-enunciated to help them along.  It was painful to listen to him try to get sentences out sometimes.

It’s important to note that at this young age, therapists make their evaluations based off of developmental cut-offs, so if I had brought Syd in at 3, he would have been released, but since 3.5 was the cut off and he should have been able to make certain sounds by that age, he slid in.  I say this because if you think your child may need therapy, the timing of evaluation and the “developmental” chart may not coincide, so he/she may clear at first, but 6 months later they would need therapy.

He continued his therapy through the school for the last 2 years, and fast forward to June of this year at his annual IEP, it was confirmed what I feared.  Syd’s speech had progressed in some of the more minor areas, but he had developed more severe issues, ones which were not so easy to fix and would in fact take at least 2+ more years to remedy.  His frontal lisp was gone, he could pronounce his “l’s” and “t’s”, but in conversational speech he still let them slide quite often.  At 6 years old, he still couldn’t say his sister’s name correctly, and he had now developed a side lisp that made “s” sound like “sh” and “ch” sound like “chhug”.  He had also reverted back to this very quiet, baby talk sort of voice where he blended a lot of his words and sounds.

Against the advice of his therapist at school who didn’t think he’d revert over summer break, I sought out professional, private therapy.  1 month in and while we aren’t’ seeing drastic results yet, and she assures us we have a lot of work to do, she leaves me feeling confident (most days), that he will get there.  Instead of working on individual sounds, like they do in therapy at school, she has him working on fixing the issues that are causing the sound distortion in the first place.  Things like strengthening the tongue and mouth muscles with interesting exercises, practicing tongue placement, and even practicing the way he chews and swallows.  Things he would have never done in school therapy.  His therapist feels, and I can’t help but agree because it makes perfect sense, is that if we fix the reason why he’s having the issues, the sounds will come on their own in a way.

Our goal is to have his speech up to speed by the end of 1st grade, so when he enters 2nd grade, he can enter confidently and with pride.  A whole year away and a whole year’s worth of work, but my stubborn guy with an iron will is willing to put in the work.  She confirms that his stubbornness drives his tenacity and spills over into his work ethic.  She admitted he’s one of the hardest working kids she’s had.

I’m telling you all this because a few friends, and even a couple of readers, wonder if they should seek out a professional evaluation.  My answer is always always YES!  And some have even asked themselves if it’s really that big of a deal.  On the scale of 1-10 in childhood issues/disabilities/complications your child could have, it’s pretty minor I suppose.  My boy is healthy and for that I’m grateful.  But on a scale of 1-10 in building childhood confidence, I’d rate it pretty high up there, at least a 9.  Navigating the rocky roads of growing up is hard enough to do, why make it harder by adding speech complications along with it, especially if they’re ones that can be fixed?  If  you think your child may have some speech problems, please consider having them evaluated because you really have nothing to lose.

In the Fall, we will continue with our private sessions in addition to school therapy, and I’m so thankful that our health insurance covers speech therapy sessions.  They go against our deductible, but at least it’s something.  And I am very grateful for our awesome speech therapist at our school and I don’t mean to discredit he techniques or methods.  She has state guidelines she has to follow, and is working with 3-4 kids at a time, whereas our private sessions are just with Syd, and she can use whichever methods she sees fit.    Our school therapist is doing the best she can with what she has to work with.

I hadn’t intended this to be so long, but once I started going, I felt I couldn’t give the full up-to-date story without giving some history.  If any of you out there have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.  Or conversely, if you’ve had a child go through speech therapy, I’d love to hear your experience and would appreciate any advice or perspective.

DIY Geometric Fabric Coaster

I’m so happy to have Caroline on board to share some fabric tutorials with you. I love to sew, but this last year my sewing machine hasn’t seen much light with Hayden around.  Caroline works at a fabric store and therefore is around sewing inspiration daily.  Here she is today, sharing a quick project that you can make for yourself or a friend. DIY fabric coaster

Hi For The Love Of readers.  Caroline here again with a super quick DIY that is perfect for gift-giving.  Some call it a mug rug, but let’s just call it what it is, a coaster!  By using some fresh, updates solid colors, this coaster gets a bit of a geometric feel.  Here’s the how-to.

Supplies needed:
-6 5-6″ squares of fabric (2 of three different colors or patterns works best)
-1 5-6″ square of felt or quilter’s batting
-pins, scissors, iron, + sewing machine
First, you’ll start off by cutting your squares. I used a “charm pack” that included lots of different solid-colored 6″ squares. You can use something like this OR grab some fun fabrics from your scrap pile. Whatever you choose, you’ll need 6 5-6″ squares plus one 5-6″ square of felt
After you’re finished cutting, you’ll sandwich the felt or batting between two fabric squares.
With the remaining four fabric squares, fold and press them down one diagonal (as pictured below)
Next, you’ll layer the folded squares as show in the photos below to create a color-blocked effect.
Make sure the corners and edges are all lined up through all 5 layers.
Once you have your squares all lined up, pin everything in place really well.
The, you’ll sew around the entire edge using about a 3/8″ seam allowance. Take out your pins and clip your corners being careful not to clip any stitches.
Then, you flip it all right side out and press.
The perfect size to sit your coffee mug upon!
Thanks for reading, I hope you can enjoy your coffee in style, now!

Found: a night time beauty routine so simple I can do it while camping

Happy Wednesday friends, and congratulations to making it to hump day, which seems especially triumphant of an achievement during the middle of summer. I’m kidding, we’ve been having a great summer so far, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t the least bit exhausted and ready to crash by 9 pm. Between spending lots of time outdoors in the hot sun, running the kids to and from camps, which sometimes seems more trouble than it’s actually worth, and coming up with somewhat stimulating activities that won’t leave them zombie-like by the end of summer, having 3 kids home all day makes for well, a long day. I salute the moms and dads who home school and this is their everyday.

And because it’s summer, we seem to be on the go more and allowing things to slide more, like an 8 o’clock bedtime, and most nights the kids are getting into bed by 9pm, just when my body is ready to shut down. For years I had the very bad habit of stumbling to the couch after bedtime, and plunking my rear there until I fell asleep for 2 hours, then stumbled back to bed, where I fumbled through brushing and flossing my teeth, and taking out my contacts. I skipped washing my face because that would wake me up too much then I wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep for hours. It was a terrible habit I still revert back to on occasion, but lately I’ve started a new night time routine.

Immediately after the kids go to bed I haul myself to the bathroom. I wash my face, brush my teeth and floss, moisturize and take out my contacts. Then I stumble to the couch where I zone out, watching TV, and most nights I still fall asleep on the couch, but at least my face is washed and my teeth are clean, and I can transfer myself to bed at midnight with barely an interruption. As you can see, I’m one of those strange people who like falling asleep to the TV. My dad does it and my brother does it too. It’s almost in our genes. Plus, I think my parents let me do it way too much when I was a kid, which is precisely why I won’t allow TV’s in my kid’s rooms; I want them to sleep more so than I’m worried about them turning into zombies!

The whole beauty routine at this point in my life is pretty darn simple, since I’ve mentioned a few times that I’m all about simplifying and stripping down. Simplifying in the beauty department for me has made it less intimidating and daunting, especially at 9 o’clock. It includes washing my face with a very gentle cleanser, applying some moisturizer (since July 1st I’ve been using the Aveeno wash and night moisturizer, as I mentioned here), dabbing on some eye cream, always with your ring fingers(!), and applying a coat of lip moisturizer. I brush my teeth early so I won’t be tempted to snack, which always doesn’t work, especially if we’re watching a nail biter like Walking Dead (what’s with my zombie fascination?) or Dexter. And I always, MUST have a fresh glass of water sitting on my nightstand. I can’t go to sleep without knowing it’s there, because I always wake up for a drink of water in the middle of the night. I seemed to have unintentionally let you in on some of my strange and OCD tendencies; the need to fall asleep on the couch at night, my fascination with zombies, and my need for routine.

I’ve shared my secrets, now share yours. What is your night time beauty routine? Is it exhaustive and detailed, or is it simple like mine? Or are you young enough where you haven’t found the need to start one yet? 😉

Hi everyone and happy Monday! I’m really excited to announce a huge giveaway today, valued at over $900, with 3 winners getting a prize package valued at a minimum of $300. This is the first time I’ve ever participated in one of these group giveaways, and while I’ve been hesitant, I love what us ladies have all pulled together to share with you, because they each represent our personal tastes and reflect the relationships we’ve built! So first let me share with you all what’s up for grabs. EPIC-summer-giveaway-logo The idea was to create a themed giveaway so we focused on the idea of capturing your Summer memories, since we all love to take pictures (even though some of us aren’t the best at doing anything with said pictures, ahem). Then some other rad sponsors decided to join in and the giveaway just evolved. The ladies that I got together with to offer this awesome giveaway are ladies I’ve never actually met, but who I rely on to bounce ideas off of, ask questions and lean on when I get discouraged. We have a Facebook group that is pretty active and supportive and I appreciate each and every one of them. Please visit them if you have a chance. EPIC-giveaway-bloggers-collage-1024x446

For the Mommas Of The Little Ones

IMG_7105 It dawned on me the other night, as I was sitting around with a group of girlfriends whom I had grown up with, so to speak, as a mother, that it was an end of an era. We all had kids, especially our first 2, very close together and the kids were all very close in age. Our kids had grown up together, through play dates and park adventures and outings to far flung museums I can’t believe we were so adventurous to try with such young ones. At the time, we picked their friends by our choice in friends. They played together because us moms all loved, respected and got along with each other. As time went on and the start of elementary school began, our adventures together with the kids dwindled off, the kids started to form their own interests, and therefore preferences in play date buddies, but at the heart of it all, was the foundation of them growing up together, from babes to toddlers to preschoolers to school age children. Those foundations are strong and those bonds are hard to break.

I’ve been in denial that it’s the end of an era, that our kids are no longer babies, or even toddlers. They’re all in elementary school, our weekday adventures long gone. And while those days of having 2 under 2 were often, so so hard, they were also ridiculously special. The friendships I formed, the bonds the kids made together, are some which will never be forgotten.

Mommas of little ones, still toddling around, still nursing day and night, still crying at preschool drop off; treasure this time. I know it sounds crazy, but one day you’ll look back and realize just how special of a time it was. Go out and make friends, find a tribe that you can vent to and cry with and laugh with and your kids can spend this special time with. Once school starts it’s a whole new story and that chapter will be closed forever. You may not be able to see it now, but this time is hard and rough but it is very, very special.

I’m happy where we are right now, but I’d love to go back in time just for a day and have one more Aquarium adventure with the gang, chasing after a couple of toddlers, wondering how my life had come to this. Hindsight is always 20/20 I guess.

*The kids had a really special sleepover last night, with their 2 buddies they grew up with on Julian Ave. Syd and O have known each other since they day O was born. Taylor and C met when they moved on our block, when they were both just 2 years old. It was a great, great night and morning. Next week they move across the country and while I’m optimistic that our friendship is strong enough and special enough to last, of course I can’t help but be sad that we won’t be able to see them whenever we want. Last night, as we were swimming, I turned to Art and said, “I hope they all remember this time together.” He assured me without a doubt that they would, and I can’t help but believe him.

I’ll be honest folks, it’s been a week and I am just slightly overwhelmed, but in as good of a way as overwhelmed can be. I guess. I hope you don’t mind me being brief today, as I have a baby to nurse and Syd’s speech therapy appointment in 10 minutes (!). I hope you all have a great weekend, and in the mean time, here’s a few tidbits of things I’m dreaming of and wishing for, and really loving.

– Art and I booked our first post-Hayden get away at the Ojai Ranch Inn. It’s just one night and it’s only $89 per night, and I’m ridiculously excited.

– The kids and I spent the entire day and night at Crystal Cove yesterday, and I was reminded just how dreamy that place is, now that I can swim in the ocean sans baby in my belly. Here’s a recap I wrote last year on this magical beach, in case you’re in the mood to visit: for the love of Crystal Cove

– I just finished Where’d You Go Bernadette? and it was hilarious, witty and thoughtful. A great summer read I can’t recommend enough.

– New accounts (to me) to love on Instagram: pugly pixel & danniremender & madebylon

– Who says boy’s clothes have to be dull and boring, and full of plaid and motorcross trucks? Polarn O. Pyret shopping for boys (and girls)

– I’ve started to grow quite fond of my one-pieces, and I’ve heard the suits from Lands End are quite good. I’m sort of loving this one in Oak Moss and it’s 30% off. And Brooke White posted herself wearing this cute polka dot number from Albion Fit and it looked so cute.

Playing Off the Sun

We spent the past weekend in Big Bear with 3 other sets of families, and if you follow me on Instagram, you will know that it was pretty much like living in 1 big awesome frat house for the weekend.  In all there were 9 kids, 2 babies and 8 adults all staying on 1 big house.  While at times it was a bit loud, and there were some tears shed by little girls who seem to be drawn to a touch of drama, for the most part, it was a great trip spent on the lake, riding Super Mable and drinking whiskey by the fire after kiddie bed time.  I’d be lying though if I said some of the funnest memories though, were the ones spent with just my girlfriends, while the dads were in charge with the kids on the boats, or while we went on walks with the babies.  Spending time with your friends is never a bad investment.
lake2
Between regular beach days, pool days, and a good dose of sunning lakeside, all this time outside this summer has been awesome, but it’s doing a number on my skin.  I was getting my tan on while baby napped and the kids were on the boat, and I mentioned to my friends that my legs were starting to get that dry look to them, that seems to be growing ever more present the older I get.  I swear I don’t sit around all day and analyze my skin tone and texture, looking for flaws and critiquing each wrinkle.  I’m much too busy breaking up fights and nursing a baby for that.  But when you’re just hanging out, with time on your hands, your mind wanders a bit, doesn’t it?  When I spend too much time in the sun, I’ve been noticing a few things that happen.  First, my legs get that dry, scaly texture to them.  Second, my chest gets these deep creases in them.  Third, those sun spots I’m trying to work on getting rid of?  They seem to grow a bit more pronounced and darker, and new ones pop up.  And lastly, my knees of all things (oh dear), get super dry.  The bad news is, my skin is growing more and more sensitive to sun exposure, which really sucks seeing as how I live in Southern California, where the sun is shining 300+ days of the year.  The good news is, I don’t feel old (yeah!), and my skin is still youthful enough, that it tends to bounce back pretty well, when I give it some extra TLC. lake4
lake3
With my growing accumulation of awesome hats, I’m trying to be extra diligent about always wearing one while out in the sun, to keep the sun spots from increasing with intensity and number.  Drinking tons of water is crucial to staying hydrated and keeping headaches at bay, especially when drinking in the sun (beer anyone?), but water also helps your skin stay refreshed and hydrated too.  And moisturizing like a mad woman helps to keep that sun-exposed skin from getting that dry scaly look, the one I complained about when I was sunning myself lakeside.  I’m obsessive about immediately showering after I spend time in the pool or ocean, because the water mixed with sun, always dries out my skin and leaves it feeling tight and uncomfortable.  A quick rinse takes off the coat of salt water, but also gets it primed for a fresh coat of lotion.  I already use Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion, and it works great on its own, but to give my skin an extra bit of dewiness, I’ve been mixing a bit of Hayden’s baby oil in with it too.  Sounds strange, but I swear my sun parched skin just soaks it right up and even seems to intensify my tan.
lake1
So while getting older means being more cautious and less carefree in the sun, and while I often feel like a crazy lady chasing my kids and husband around with a can of sunscreen, it’s nice to know that my skin is still young enough to save a bit, and can rebound quite successfully from a bit of sun exposure. So what are some of your tips to help save your skin from the sun, and what do you do to give it extra TLC when you’ve exposed it to a day out? Aveeno-Active-Naturals-Logo

Summer Loves – Hats & Ridiculous Shoes

Summer is taking its toll on me in all the best ways possible. While I’ve been making notes and brainstorming posts for you like mad, I’ve also been telling myself that it’s summer and I need to try to make it count. So while I wanted so badly this week to get the cute sandal DIY, and my nursing style picks posted, there’s just not enough time in the day right now it seems. So I thought I’d just share with you in a very casual way what I’m loving lately.
Panama Hat
My hat obsession continues on, and I was delighted to find the perfect and “officially authentic” Panama hat at J. Crew last week. And it even comes sized, so I got an XL for my extra large noggin. I swear I have a bigger head than my husband, which makes hat buying hard sometimes (womp womp, tough life I know). None of the hats at Target ever really fit me, so I have to usually get hats at nicer establishments and pay more than $9.99. But Anthropologie has some fantastic hats this season, and are all pretty reasonably priced. Hats! 1. Panama Hat J. Crew 2. Fiji Straw Fedora Yellow 108 3. Knotted Marble Rancher Anthropologie 4. Orange Straw Fedora Hat Attack (my FAVORITE hat!) 5. Bowed Straw Cloche Anthropologie 6. Canyon Felt Hat Yellow 108 8. I Heart Hat Yellow 108

While I’m still not sure about wearing felt hats in the summer time, my friend Laura seems to have no trouble pulling it off effortlessly.  And the huge striped hat seems to have sold out overnight on Anthro’s site, but having seen it in person, I can assure you it is all sorts of fabulous and you’d definitely make a statement wearing it to the pool.  My orange hat from Hat Attack has been a summer staple at the pool and beach and makes me feel very glamorous.  Hats are the perfect accessory for a bad hair day, but really do serve as your staple stunner piece when topped off with pretty curled hair, a fresh face of makeup, and a sweet sun dress.

And while I hate to serve as a bad influence in the shopping department, I have to tell you how much I love my shoes that recently arrived from ShoeMint, the Jordane.  I really wanted the yellow color but settled for the nude and love them so much.  I’ve been walking around with them on my feet for the last 2 days, and while I may look ridiculous running errands in wedge heels, carrying a baby, as a woman, I feel fantastic in them.  They’re comfortable and look great with jeans, shorts, and dresses.  I will be getting a lot of use out of these. ShoeMint Jordane

So how is your summer going?  Any thing you’re particularly loving these days?  Sorry I’ve been semi-absent the last few days.  It seems that prepping and recovery from short 3 day getaways, now that I have 3 kids to pack for, takes quite the toll on productivity and efficiency.  My clothes are still in a heap at the foot of my bed.  Oh well, it’s too pretty out to be worried about piles of clothes and unfinished blog posts, am I right, or am I right?

Happy day to you!

The Dietary Changes That Have Changed Me The Most

Healthy Food, Healthy Skin As of yesterday, it has been 5 weeks since I quite drastically changed the way I eat, by cooking “clean foods”.  I want to preface this post by saying that I have not completely eliminated some food items from my diet altogether, however, I have made quite drastic changes and can easily say I’ve changed and/or eliminated these items out of my regular way of eating for at least 75% of the time.  Or in the case of juicing, added in some items in the form of lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Aside from my detox saga, which you can read about here, through learning to cook over 30 new “clean eating” recipes, I’ve made changes I never thought I would be able to make.

Between a mix of stubborn tenacity and an honest love of food, things I never thought I could or would give up included all things dairy, red meat, and carbohydrates.  I wanted to share with you the few real changes I’ve made, that I’ve discovered weren’t that hard to change after all, once I had discovered some other alternatives.

Dairy – a self proclaimed lover of cheese and all things dairy, I had long heard that giving up some/most/all dairy would and could benefit you with clearer skin, better digestive processes, and let’s be honest, a few extra pounds.  While those things all sounded wonderfully fab, I never thought on earth I could possibly make any cut backs.  Well, I have indeed made cut backs, and it turns out it hasn’t really been that hard.  I’ll never be one to pass up a good cheese plate, here’s a few areas where I have been easily able to cut back.

Milk.  I now drink primarily almond milk with my cereal, my coffee and in many recipes that call for regular cow’s milk.  Almond milk is a great source of calcium and protein, at a fraction of the calories.

Cheese, and skipping it when I don’t need it was something I never did, on sandwiches, and burgers (had my first bit of red meat in 5 weeks just the other day!), in my eggs.  Where cheese plays just a supporting role, rather than the starring role, I’ve just started skipping it all together basically.

Butter and Spreads.  I’ve now consistently made the switch to Vegenaise and olive oil margarine spread, and use it on all things toasted and sandwich related.  Again, in areas where butter is more of a supporting role, I haven’t missed it at all.  I’m still in search for a real butter alternative when baking haha, but for now I’m experimenting with different recipes in the book, using coconut oil and other forms of dairy replacement nonsense 😉

Yogurt.  While I haven’t given up yogurt entirely, I have switched to goat’s milk yogurt, which has been shown to be more gentle on the digestive system than regular cow’s milk yogurt.  It has a tart and tangy flavor, much like Greek yogurt, although is more expensive.  Because of this I eat it sparingly now, when I am truly craving it, not just to have a snack like I normally would do.

So has dairy truly affected my health? It’s hard to really say since I’ve made several changes at once, but I have most definitely been free of many stomach aches and cramping that I experienced on an almost daily basis, and my skin seems to be taking the heat and summer sun much better than it normally does. I haven’t had any blotchiness like I normally get, and my skin feels hydrated and the texture overall smoother than usual. I have also had fewer sinus issues, like a stuffy nose, which I normally got quiet often.

Juicing – Making my own fresh juices each morning has most definitely made the biggest impact on my energy levels and stamina. And I swear when I add some extra ginger, it makes my skin GLOW! Or at least it feels that way. Drinking all that extra liquid definitely keeps me more hydrated, which in turn keeps my skin more hydrated. It may be all in my head, but I really feel like most days my skin is more dewy. If you’re a friend of mine in real life, please don’t tell me otherwise, if it is all in my head. And while there is some debate about whether juicing is all that much better for you than say, eating your veggies, I will simply say this. For my morning juice today, I had an entire raw beet, 3 carrots, an apple and a slice of ginger. Do I lose some nutritional value when juicing? Of course! But would I ever sit down at breakfast time and actually eat all those fruits and veggies in one sitting, raw? Of course not! I’m doing more good to my health, by adding juicing in, than harming it. I’m not eating less veggies because I’m juicing, it’s just an added benefit. I really don’t get why some people have to find every little thing to pick apart and try to be argumentative about (I actually got in a debate on Facebook last week about juicing).

Vegan Cooking – We will never become a Vegan family, but it has been liberating to learn to cook vegan, and discover that we as a family, could survive a dinner without some form of meat. The meat we have started to eat is primarily all organic and/or grass fed, and we’ve drastically cut back on our red meat consumption. Again, for me it was about finding alternatives, so once I started trying main dish recipes which were vegan, yet still supplied plenty of protein and nutrients, and didn’t lack flavor, I was happily on board to cook this way as often as possible.

For me, discovering a new way to eat and cook isn’t so much about getting and seeing dramatic results in weight, skin, overall health, but is very much about finding other options and better educating myself. Some days it’s about showing myself that I can do it more than anything. The other health benefits that come from it are the added bonus, and ones that I’ll gladly take.

So, have you found making changes to certain aspects of your diet have indeed affected your skin health, your digestive health, mental health even? What changes have you made that changed you for the better?

DIY Braided Belt

Hello friends, Andrea here.  Today I’m excited to introduce you to my friend and fellow DIY obsessed girl, Caroline from Sew Caroline.  This is a first for me here, having a contributor, as I’ve always worked hard to try and maintain this space for me and my work only.  But as time goes on, my family grows, and so does my work as a blogger, I’ve finally realized I just can’t do it alone.  So I’ve chosen a contributor whose work I value and respect, and I hope you do too.  I’ve been stubborn for too long, and am excited to share the talent of those who I appreciate.  So without further adieu, here’s Caroline with her first DIY tutorial!
Hi For The Love Of readers… I am so excited to be here today sharing a DIY tutorial with you. My name is Caroline and I have a creative lifestyle blog called Sew Caroline where I write about my sewing projects, DIYs, recipes, and life in Texas. I’ve been a long-time fan of Andrea and her style, so I was thrilled when she asked me to contribute for her blog.  Today, I am going to show you how to make an adorable braided belt, perfect to pair with your favorite Summer dress.

What you’ll need:
-“Fashion Buckle” (can be found at your local craft store. there are many different styles to choose from. I went with a simple one, but the possibilities are endless.)
-Fabric scraps. (these scraps are 100% quilter’s-weight cotton, but many different types of fabrics would work as well)

You’re going to start your belt by cutting 1″ strips of your scraps. Having lots of different colors and fabrics of scraps makes for an interesting and eclectic-looking belt.  You’ll need enough scraps to make five 70″ long strips. Piece your 1″ scraps together to make these five strips.  After you’ve got your five 1″ by 70″ strips, stack and sew them together at the very top.

Now, you’ll braid these strands together.
To make a 5-strand braid, you’ll start with the strand on the far left and go over the strand next to it and under the next strand.  Then, you’ll grab the strand on the far right side and do the same (over the strand directly to the left of it and under the next one).  Continue this all the way down your belt.  When you have completed your braid, use a zig-zag stitch to secure the ends together. You’ll want to stitch over it a couple of times.

Next, take one end and loop it through the center of the belt buckle and secure it to the back of your belt using another zig-zag stitch. You’re going to want to use thread that coordinates with your fabric for this, because you’ll be able to see it.

When you’ve got your belt buckle sewn in, you’re ready to try it on!
