I feel like perhaps I’ve acted a bit blase about this pregnancy.  Often when I’ve written about expecting our third baby on my other blog, it’s been with a touch of sarcasm, humor and even anxiety.  And while yes, I am a bit anxious and nervous about what is to come when we are suddenly a family of 5 instead of 4, I am growing increasingly excited and amazed.  I don’t want to rush through this stage, as I know it will be the last time I’ll ever experience the miracle of growing a human being, and I don’t want to ever seem like I take it for granted.  I surely know how much of a blessing this tiny baby of ours is.

In case you’re new here and haven’t really read much of my other blog, I’ll tell you now that this time around, we aren’t finding out what we’re having.  We’re having fun tossing around unisex names that would work for a boy or a girl.  There’s not a lot of them, but the ones we’ve come up with we like a lot.  A friend suggested a new one today; Michael.  I think I like it very much.  Number 3 is already a blessing to our family and to me.  Today my husband said “Oh wow, it’s coming up so fast, what are we going to do with this baby?!”  I said, “Eh, we’ll figure it out.”  He was amazed at my response, and quite proud of me, and how relaxed I’m being this time around.  I’m normally quite the nervous Nellie while pregnant.  Or rather, all the time.

And I’m not ashamed or embarrassed to say I feel pretty, as every pregnant woman should.  Daily style posts have taken on a whole new meaning for me.  I love you baby bean, and it’s been so fun watching you grow.

Daily Style – Packing Light

(20 weeks style: Maxi Skirt – James Perse; Tank – Gap; Jean Jacket – Nordstrom; Heart Pin – Ban.Do; Sunglaasses – Coach; Shoes – Sam Edelman)

The kids and I went to the desert with some friends for one night.  I’m not always the best packer, and my packing skills decrease as the length of the trip increases.  But since it was only for one night and my options are a bit limited during this season, I have to admit I was a bit of a packing ninja, managing to get all 3 of our belongings into one small carry-on.  Oh and P.S., the maxi skirt did not exist when I was last pregnant, and after wearing this one now, I’m just about never going to take it off for the next 20 weeks.  Maternity jeans suck, maxi skirts are amazing.

You can pretty much dress one of two ways while in the dessert; bright and bold, or relaxed and understated, but it’s always casual.  I decided to go the relaxed and understated route and packed a 2 day wardrobe of black and white essentials, both worn back to a jean jacket and the same pair of shoes.  Lightweight, easy and simple.  It was a cinch to unpack too.

There’s a few things I never leave home without when traveling and they are: My Kindle, necessary chargers, my Canon 7D, lotion, contact solution, toothbrush and chapstick. What are some things you can’t travel without?

Daily Style – California Casual

(Tuxedo Cardigan Sweater – James Perse; Jeans – Gap Maternity; T-Shirt – James Perse; Shoes – Sam Edelman; Aviators – Coach)

It’s often said that we here in California have a sense of casual ease to our dress that can’t be replicated many other places but here.  Eddie Borgo even said that New Yorkers attempt to achieve California casual every year when summer rolls around, but don’t ever quite succeed.  Yesterday I went and visited my old stomping grounds at James Perse, known for epitomizing California casual, and had lunch with some friends.  Revisiting the headquarter offices reminded me just how simple California lifestyle dressing can be and so today I threw on just a few pieces in tonal colors and spent the day feeling comfortable but still relatively put together.  This look carried me from my birthday lunch with Mandy, to horse back riding lessons for my daughter, to dinner out with family at a relatively nice restaurant.

Each passing week in this pregnancy is proving to be a little more challenging than the previous when putting looks together, but I’m trying to just stick to my basic formula for good clean style that’s never really failed me: jeans, top and a cool layering piece.  I’m trying to buy as few maternity items as possible, mainly just bottoms, and wear the rest of my clothes as usual, layered over long tanks and tees.  In looking at these shots though I need to remember to stick to form fitting tops.  This loose fitting tee at this stage in my pregnancy just sort of hangs over the bump, making me look overall just a bit wider.  Live and learn I guess.

I’ll tell you the best thing I’ve done for myself so far is go out and buy a few new soft cup wireless bras.  I just bought some Hanes ones from Target but they have been a life saver seeing as how I’ve grown almost 2 cup sizes in less than 20 weeks.  And I’d forgotten just how comfortable wireless bras were.  Why do we women usually torture ourselves with wires?   Have a great rest of the week guys!  We’re expecting rain here so it was nice to get in a bit of sunshine today!  Linking up with Lindsey.

Beauty Essentials

Today I turn 36, and while it’s not a milestone of a birthday like last year’s, I do believe each year is special and deserves to be celebrated in even the smallest of ways.  My husband had recently surprised me with a new lens for an early gift, but he wanted to give me something small to at least open today, and so he asked for ideas.  The only thing I could think of was a beauty related item, so I thought today I’d share with you my tried and true beauty essentials that I’ve, for the most part, been using for years.  I’m not a huge makeup addict and usually only buy new items twice a year, with the occasional lipgloss purchase here and there.  The picture above completely sums up the contents of my makeup bag and are my go-to items every day of the year. Beginning with face and foundation products.  I guess I should preface this post by saying for the most part, I am a loyal Lancome fan.  I began using their products when I was 22 and had my first managerial job after college at Macy’s.  The girls at the Lancome counter lured me in during Gift With Purchase time and I’ve been a loyal customer ever since, so you’ll see a lot of Lancome items throughout the post.

Let’s start with foundation.  I had always used a Lancome foundation, and then two years ago by chance I tried Jane Iredale’s Liquid Minerals foundation, which my local beauty supply carries.  The color beads are actually floating in aloe vera and when you pump out the foundation you give it a little mix with your brush or hand and then apply.  The coverage is light yet still conceals without feeling heavy, and it makes my skin feel moist and dewy.  I use the color Amber most of the year, and then switch to Honey Bronze during the summer when I have a bit of a tan.  I can’t tell you how much I love this foundation and highly recommend it!  I use and love the Paula Dorf Foundation Brush to apply my foundation.  It is hands down my most coveted and used makeup brush.

For concealers I start with Lancome’s Maquicomplet Corrector (it has a yellow tint) to hide dark circles, and then after I’ve applied my foundation I use an eyeshadow base in Nude and the Photogenic Skin Illuminating Concealer SPF15 in Buff, both Lancome products.  Even when I don’t wear eyeshadow, I always apply the base because it gives my lids a smooth finish and evens out the color tones of my lids.

For color I usually wear Mac blush along with the Lancome blush brush, but for the past few months I’ve been using Stila’s Convertible Color in Gerbera and really enjoy the creamy finish.  I find it gives off more of a glow than traditional powder bushes. For eyes I try to keep it simple.  I’ve had this same eyeshadow Quad from Lancome for about 5 years (I kid you not).  I actually remember getting it from the Nordstrom in San Francisco when I was traveling for work, and we found out I was pregnant with Syd during that trip.  So actually that’s 5 1/2 years!  I guess perhaps I should throw this one out and get a fresh one?  At any rate I don’t wear eyeshadow everyday which is why it’s lasted me so long.  The quad color set is called Palette 4 Ombres and contains the perfect, for me, shade of brown that I can use in my crease and as an eyebrow liner, a pale pink color that I use as a highlighter, and two darker shimmery shades of olive green and augergine that I can use to highlight for a more dramatic look.

I use two shades of eyeliner; brown and black and always use Lancome’s Le Stylo Waterproof long lasting eyeliner in Cafe and Black.  I ran out of black and so have been using this Kohl eyeliner also from Lancome that I received as a GWP (I try to be resourceful and use those GWP’s to save some money).  For fun I also have the Superslick Liquid Eyeliner from MAC in On the Hunt.

I keep three brushes on hand; the 224 Tapered Blending Brush from MAC to apply my darker shadow in the crease, I use the lavender smaller brush as my highlighter (it was a Lancome GWP), and for my eyebrows I use the 266 Small Angle Brush.  I rarely fill in my brows but it’s a small brush that takes up no space so I keep it on hand.  I got both brushes in a set years ago and they are still going strong.  MAC brushes are amazing and the quality is great.

Finally, let’s talk about the ever important mascara.  I am a long fan of Definicils from Lancome and have tried several others that people rave about, specifically Great Lash from Maybelline and Stila.  I thought both were terrible (for me) and ended up being a waste of money.  I’ve also tried a couple of “newer” Lancome mascaras that are supposed to be updated but I always go back to Definicils in Black. It’s waterproof without being ridiculously hard to wash off, doesn’t irritate my eyes, doesn’t smudge or wear off and gives a good amount of definition and volume without looking fake.  I LOVE this mascara! I think lip color is the one beauty item that flows with the trends.  I recently took in a bunch of old MAC tubes for recycling and it was fun to see how the shades changed with the trends.  From the rich shimmery auburns and browns of the late 90’s early 2000’s, to the pale matte phase in nudes of the mid 2000’s to a big gloss/anti lipstick phase for a while.  It’s been fun to see bright cheery shades of lipstick colors come back over the past two years and these are a couple of my favorite shades I’m enjoying right now.  From left, MAC’s Chatter Box is a great shade of pink; girly and gives a nice pop of color without being over the top.  For a more saturated and showier shade of pink, Lancome’s Fuschia Clutch is fun (it was a GWP but is available for purchase).  When I want to go red I’ve been falling back on Jane Iredale’s Nicole, which also has SPF 18.  It’s the perfect red for most of the year and has a nice balance of orange and blue tones so it works on a variety of skin tones.  It’s very moist and moisturizing too.  My new gloss purchase recently was MAC’s Cremesheen Glass in Right Image and looks fantastic alone or over Chatter Box.  The perfect shade to carry me all through summer.

With makeup I believe that you do get what you pay for.  Most of the products I use and love are only available at department stores and cost a bit more, but I can count on them.  Whenever I’ve tried to save money and buy drug store brands I just haven’t been happy and end up feeling like I wasted more money.  I know this isn’t the case with every product out there (I actually do recall loving some Revlon products), but since I buy so few products and so rarely, I find instead of wasting time and money on experimenting, I just stick with what I know works for me.  With that being said, if you have any other products you love that could save me some cash, please share!

I also firmly believe in only stocking up during Gift With Purchase time.  Most major cosmetic lines that can be found at department stores have a regular “gift time”or a “beauty event” where you get extra goodies when you make a purchase.  About half the items I’ll actually never use, but the other half I most certainly do.  Lancome for instance always includes a trial size definicils mascara sample, and a full size sample of lipstick or lipgloss.  Many of the shades I’ve used over the years and I use the trial size mascaras to get me through to the next GWP time when I run out.  Neimans does a beauty event 2 times a year and they give out amazing samples of high priced cosmetics/beauty lines that I usually can’t afford or would splurge on.  Plan accordingly, shop wisely and take advantage of these special periods.  You need to be savvy when it comes to shopping for cosmetics since they’re usually NEVER put on sale.

I’m not sure if by average standards this is “a lot” of product, but to me it seems manageable and I can usually apply my entire makeup routine in less than 10 minutes (ask Jules about my ninja makeup skills).  I have been wanting to try a primer and a true highlighter for brows and cheeks, but haven’t taken the time to hunt for a good one.  I sampled the Laura Mercier primer recently and loved it, but will probably wait to add it to my arsenal.

So what about you guys?  What are some products you can’t live without?  Tried and true favorites, items you’ve been wanting to try?  Please share!  While I’m not a huge makeup addict, I do love getting inside scoops on what other people are using and loving.

Sweet Pastels

(lilac nails – Lucky Lucky Lavendar by OPI, ASOS maternity top)
After all the bright shades of neon last week, I have to say Easter pastels never looked so refreshing.  In the form of fresh flowers from our local florist, sweet desserts or pretty pastel nails, our Easter was very sweet.  We hosted our family for lunch after church.  Service was wonderful, and the afternoon was relaxing.  The weather was even warm enough for the kids to swim most of the day, an added bonus to that being my house remained relatively clean ha!  I hope your holiday weekend was blessed!  Back tomorrow with an outfit post.  Until then, happy Monday!  p.s. hop on over to my life blog to see a bit more of our Easter.  Oh and I made those birds nest dessert things and I have to say, they sure make for great photo ops, but definitely not my favorite.  Way too sweet for my liking, and they melted almost immediately after removing them from the fridge.  I used this recipe and it’s good if you like sugary sweet, but I’ll always be more of a savory gal.  Did you make any Easter dishes you loved or were disappointed in?

Real Women Wear Neon Too

Neon week is officially over and I hope you’ve enjoyed all the fun projects every day.  May I now be known as the Neon Queen…before we end though, I wanted to just include a few of my favorite pictures of real women wearing neon.  If you don’t feel bold or brazen enough to wear neon jeans, try a belt, a bag or just a subtle stripe for a pop of the fresh color.  You can see all my neon posts by clicking on this link.  Oh!  And I shared a couple of other kid-related neon projects over at Four Flights of Fancy, including florescent neon dinos and neon bow t-shirts for the special girl in your life.  Enjoy and happy weekend.  And happy Easter!

p.s. I started a Facebook page dedicated solely to For the Love Of and can be found here.  I would be forever grateful and happy if you went over and visited, and clicked like if you feel so inclined 🙂

I love the pop of Miranda’s neon belt in this picture, especially when shown just a peek of it under a sheer blouse.  Miranda is a busy mother of 2 just like me, and is a talented photographer.  Her style is always real and effortless, but she’s never afraid to take chances.  Love that about her! Take neon and work it into a stripe, brilliant idea Gap!  I love this shirt of mine…too bad it’s not really fitting me anymore.  Soon enough though.   To see the full original outfit post visit here. I stumbled across this girl in my search for all things neon and I love how very real she looks, even though she’s wearing flaming neon lime pants.  That’s a lot of color to pull off, but by pairing it back to a classic jean jacket and beige/white tones, she wears the jeans and the jeans don’t wear her.  Via here where you’ll find lots of other helpful denim tips.

4 Simple DIY Neon Tote Ideas

I make a lot of canvas totes, rather, I dress up a lot of canvas totes. It’s been an obsession of mine for a couple of years now. And yes, I do use them all. I give them away as gifts, use them as gift bags, use them as grocery bags, overnight bags for the kids, beach bags, really the possibilities are endless.  Here are 4 of my favorite neon inspired DIY tote bags that can all be made in less than 15 minutes (if you don’t count the drying time). I love the look of watercolors, so to achieve this bag I first practiced creating a simple gradation of colors on artist paper.  I liked the blue and green color combo the best, and gave it a beige base.  Brush on your fabric paint in light strokes, making sure not to saturate the color so it’s a bit translucent, and then layer on your next color so they overlap.

I love how sweet and simple this bow bag came out.  Print up a pdf of a bow shape you like (I always just google the shape I’m looking for with the search term silhouette – so ‘bow silhouette’).  You’re going to do a reverse stencil here, so iron on your bow, and then paint around it.  Peel off the bow once dry.

The painting of this bag is super easy.  Just add a strip of painters tape and paint the bottom half (I did paint both sides and underneath too to give it a more sophisticated look).  I went a step further and added leather straps by taking two inexpensive leather belts from H&M, cutting them to the desired length, and then sew on in place of where the canvas straps were.  Make sure to use a leather needle in your machine.

Using the same technique as I used in my t-shirt yesterday, cut out your desired pattern onto your freezer paper, iron on, and then paint in.  Let dry and peel off.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Exciting News!

I hadn’t said anything for fear of jinxing it, but since my first post is finally up and has been positively accepted, I wanted to let you know that I have signed on to be a regular contributor for Nicole at Making It Lovely.  I couldn’t be more excited and honored. My first post went up today and it’s an Easter table setting with a neon twist (of course ;))  I’d love it if you went over to check it out and said hi.  Here’s a sneak peek…

Graphic Neon Shirt

(neon t-shirt – Mossimo DIY’d by me; jean jacket – Nordstrom; jeans – Gap Maternity; shoes – ShoeMint; bracelets – vintage)

I don’t think I ever told you guys just why I’m so excited about neon making a resurgence, have I?  Well plain and simple, it’s the first trend I clearly and distinctly recall being a huge part of my life during my childhood, and to see it so beautifully reinterpreted for our current times?  It makes me giddy beyond belief.  I can now relate to how my mother felt when wide leg jeans made a comeback (we will call them wide leg jeans and not bell bottoms ok?).  And yes, even pregnant girls can sport some neon right?  If this isn’t showing you how to take a trend and make it work for you, then I don’t know what is.

Because I love you all so much, I’m including the simple tutorial on how to make your own little geometric inspired neon shirt.  It includes some of my favorite mediums, fabric paint and good ol’ freezer paper.  Directions after the outfit pics…
Supplies: fabric paint, t-shirt, xacto knife, freezer paper, pen & sponge brushes

I love neon back to neutrals so I experimented a bit with a gradated color effect here, building the color off of beige.  To achieve the beige color I just took Tulip fabric paint in linen and added a spot of brown to it.  The rest are their standard neon colors.  An important note, make sure to place a rag between your t-shirt layers, especially when working with such a light fabric as cotton knit.  Your paint will indeed bleed through.  Oh, and of course iron on your freezer paper before painting in.  I guess I’ve done so many tutorials with this medium I just assume that’s a given and didn’t include it in the picture above, but ironing on is how you create your perfect stencil!  The t-shirt was from Target for $8, so in all this project cost less than $10.  Enjoy!
