Daily Style Week 10

Dress: BCBG; Blazer: Zara; Posie: The Pleated Poppy; Booties: Dolce Vita

It’s almost midnight and if you read my post earlier today, you know my political stance and can probably guess how I’m feeling right about now.  So excuse me if my mindset is not completely focused on fashion right now, but I’m feeling a little sad trombone.  Tomorrow I will wake up, put on some rose colored glasses and have faith.  And perhaps rewrite this post.  But for now, I’m going to keep it short and sweet.

Striped dress, screams Spring, but add a blazer and some booties and you’ve instantly transitioned that Spring dress into Fall.  Add tights when it’s not 80 degrees out in November (true story), and you have an even truer Fall look.   Done and done.  How would you transition this dress?

And can I just give a mention to my cute posie pin from The Pleated Poppy, that today functions as a gorg hair clip?  Last week I wore them in an ombre cluster to prettify my jean jacket, and today I use it as a sassy hair clip.  I love accessories that work hard and play double, even triple duty for you.  Would you like to win a posie pin of your own, or something else from Lindsey’s shop?  Enter below for a chance to win a $25 shop credit to The Pleated Poppy.  And if you by chance don’t win, don’t fret!  Lindsey is offering my readers a 15% discount code.  Just type in FOURFLIGHTS15 (all caps) at checkout!

Don’t Hate Me Because I’m A Republican

I realize I’m walking on dangerous ground by publishing a political post on here, especially today of all days.  But I thought I’d write about something a bit different, and perhaps help you get to know me a little bit better.  Why mix blogging with politics?  Well, for no other reason than the simple fact that politics are important to me.  If politics aren’t important to you, then by all means move on and skip this post.  This morning I posted to my Instagram feed and Twitter a picture of my Romney yard sign with the caption, “It’s Go Time.”  In a matter of minutes I watched the unfollows commence, both on IG and on Twitter.  One follower commented (and later apologized), that she was disappointed in me and my views.  It’s not the first time that I’ve heard something similar this election year, after posting a political statement via Twitter.  I’ve had several people tell me I must hate women since I’m voting for Romney.  Seriously.

So here’s the thing, I thought I’d take a moment today, on election day, when we get to exercise our political views in absolute freedom and without fear of persecution, to let you know what kind of Republican I am.  Not to try and persuade anyone to my side, not to try and argue for one party over the other, but just to remind us all that we cannot put each other in boxes based solely on political parties.

My parents are staunch Republicans.  They are also ridiculously pro-Union, a combo you don’t typically see.  Aside from a brief moment where I went vegetarian and vandalized the local Albertson’s meat department with PETA “Meat Is Murder” stickers, I have always held right-leaning political views since I knew enough to have a view.  My dad is a retired truck driver, my mom a retired grocery checker.  Neither of them graduated college and instead got good paying Union jobs to help support the family.  My brother and I are the first of our family to go to college, and we paid our way with a combination of help from our parents and taking out student loans.  We very much grew up with the belief that hard work pays off, and that government should stay the heck out of our lives as much as possible. We are far from being rich or entitled, yet we are still Republicans.  I tell you all this because I firmly believe that where you come from and how you grew up largely impacts and shapes your belief system.

As an individual however, I also believe in marriage equality and I am pro-choice.  On the other hand though, I don’t believe that companies should be forced to pay for women’s contraception.  If that’s the sticking point that makes me hate women, well then I guess I hate women, but that’s severely short-sighted if you ask me.  I realize that being pro-choice and believing in marriage equality may also make me a bad Republican and a bad Christian, but for various reasons that I don’t need to get into, it’s what I believe.

So when people tell me that as a Republican, I must not believe in women’s rights, or gay rights, or worst of all, that I’m racist(!), it irritates me.  I can identify with a political party, but not believe in 100% of their views.  I can endorse a candidate, yet still see that he has flaws.  You see, I believe that there is more to Romney than his binders of women, just like there’s more to Obama than Benghazi.  I believe the Republican party has a lot of work to do to redefine itself, but for now it’s the political party I most identify with.

So please, before you decide to not like someone based on their political party, reconsider.  There’s always a bigger picture.  Tomorrow I’ll be back to outfit posts and giveaways and fun stuff, but today I just had to get this off my chest.  Thanks for reading, whether you’re a liberal or a right-winger.  I love you all the same (as long as you’re respectful).  Happy Election Day!

May the Force Be With You

Hello all!  It’s been a busy few days with lots of things to tend to, so I’ve had to hold off posting for a couple of days to try to get things accomplished.  I just wanted to pop in though to say hello and wish you all a wonderful weekend.  I also thought I’d share a few pictures of our family Halloween costume, a Star Wars theme as you can see.  We had a great time putting it together for my in laws annual Halloween party and had fun dressing up.  By the time Halloween actually came around though Art and I were too exhausted to actually get dressed up, but at least we have these.  I hope you all had a great Halloween and are enjoying all the post holiday candy as much as we are!

See you back here on Monday where we will go back to regular posting.  I’m hosting a party tomorrow, so that always throws me for a bit of a loop, as I get excited planning out details and trying to make things just right.  Add in a holiday and I’m toast.  Excited to be back to normal next week!

Daily Style – The Best Pants

Pants – Club Monaco; T-Shirt – James Perse; Denim Jacket – Nordstrom; Pins – The Pleated Poppy c/o; Watch – Michael Kors; Shoes – Banana Republic

For as often as I’ve been wearing these pants the last few weeks I’m just now getting around to posting them.  I’ve worn them for casual coffee with a friend, like today, and for a nice dinner out with some heels and gave them a more dressed up feel.  I love that the tuxedo stripe and cropped length keep them from feeling too pajama like, something that could easily happen given the elastic waistband and print.

These silky lounge pants are all over this season, so to keep them from looking like you rolled out of bed in your pajamas, pair them with a dressier flat or heel; think patent leather or a pointed toe, and layer with a sweater or a jacket.  Just don’t double up on the silk, or else you will look like you’re wearing Hef’s pajamas 😉

I hope everyone is having a great week and gearing up for Halloween!  We still need to carve our pumpkins tonight!

Daily Style Week 9 – Stripes All Around & a Giveaway

Dress – London Times c/o; Flower Poof – ban.do; Shoes – Madewell; Clutch – American Apparel

The age old rule says that stripes make you look wider, therefore unless you’re Twiggy, you should avoid stripes at all cost.  But in recent years with stripes making the biggest pattern comeback since paisleys, particularly in the form of the Breton stripe, women seem a lot more open to trying them on for size.

Right now I’m floating between a size 8 and 10, and I’m usually a 4-6.  I’m carrying most of the weight in my midsection, but also in my inner thighs and arms.  The stripe in this dress works for my postpartum size and shape because they are larger stripes, and are broken up by the intermittent pop of blue color, and the silhouette has more of a loose, a-line, retro feel.  It sort of hangs on the body the way dresses did back in the 60’s, as opposed to hugging every bump and curve.  The knit is weightier as well, so it hides a multitude of sins, as opposed to being some flimsy jersey fabrication that suctions to your skin.

I wore this dress out in LA last week when I went to the Oh Joy! book signing, and to give it more of a casual feel, I wore a pair of polka dot flats and added some whimsy with the bright flower poof, one of my absolute favorite accessories and worth every penny.  To make it more office appropriate, add some opaque tights and a suede bootie or even keep the flats.  You know you have a good dress on your hands when you can wear it for work or for play.  Linking up with Monday Mingle.

Would you like to win a $100 shop credit to London Times and pick up this cutie, or something else that peeks your interest?  See below for how to enter to win!

DIY Masquerade Mask

The wonderful thing about being an adult at Halloween is that you can make minimal effort in terms of getting in costume, yet still count as being in costume.  Throw on some borrowed scrubs, hey, you’re a doctor!  Wear a pair of glasses and a pocket protector, instant geek!  Sunscreen and a Hawaiian shirt?  Say hello to the Hawaiian tourist.  When you think about it, there’s really no acceptable reason for you not to dress up considering it doesn’t take much, right?  If you’re looking for something a bit more glamorous and pretty than the wayward tourist, and need something quick and easy, you’ve come to the right place.  Why not make yourself a pretty masquerade mask, apply some heavy liner and slip on a sequin blouse, and you’re ready for the ball!  This DIY is quick and very budget friendly.

To get started all you need are some feathers, a few jewels, your glue gun and a simple black mask.
Simply apply some glue.  Tip: smear the hot glue around a bit so that you don’t get any bumps underneath the very lightweight feathers.  Apply your feathers in layers, either all over, as I did for the fuchsia mask, or on either side like I did for the turquoise mask.  Cut and trim tail ends and feathers as needed. Add some heavy makeup, a deep rich hue of lipstick and perhaps a fake mole.  With the addition of a sparkly shirt and jewels, and a teased hairstyle, and you’ve got yourself a dramatic, yet ridiculously easy, Halloween costume.  Happy creating!  And Happy Halloween!

Daily Style – The Bootie Transitions

Fall is definitely taking its time getting to Southern California, but the nights are at least a bit brisker and a family trip to the pumpkin patch this past weekend actually called for a sweater and socks with my boots.

Jeans – Gap; Sweater – James Perse; Booties – Dolce Vita; Socks – Madewell; Purse – Marc by Marc Jacobs

I got a lot of use out of these booties during Spring and even Summer, but now is the time to transition them into Fall.  To highlight their cute silhouette, I’m wearing them with cuffed boyfriend jeans, and adding a pair of funky socks.  They’ll work perfectly with dresses too by just adding some tights, or if I’m daring, maybe some knee high socks?

Either way, if the blazer is the new cardigan, then the bootie is the new riding boot, or maybe even the new ballet flat for Fall?  I love that the heel height is totally functional yet just high enough to give me a lift, and are rugged to hang at the park or pumpkin patch, but nice enough to pair with a dress.  Find some bootie options below, from lo to high price range.  The ones I’m wearing are on sale again, and are linked in the mid price range!  Have a great week, and happy shopping everyone!  Linking up with WIWW.

Life With 3

We got pregnant with Hayden on our trip to Napa last year. Is that too much information? Well you know how we got pregnant, so what difference does it make if you know where too, right? Anyhow, while we were on that trip, we bought lots of wine, and joined a couple of wine clubs. We love wine. Not in the snobbish way, where we can detect the difference between leather undertones from tobacco, like musicians can detect middle C from high C. We just like our wine, and don’t care what vintage it is or how much it’s worth; if it tastes good to us, then that’s all we care about. So soon after our trip to Napa, we found out we were pregnant, and then subsequently, the wine we had ordered on our trip all started arriving at our doorstep. Art, being the smart and wise man that he is, knew better than to open any of that wine from our trip for the duration of our pregnancy, and so it sat, and piled up. After 9 months, we had at least 20 bottles from our trip just sitting there, a reminder of our little blessing, if you will. Read More »

Daily Style Week 8 – The Blazer Outside Of Work

Blazer – Zara; Blouse – J. Crew; Jeans – Gap; Loafers – ShoeMint; Pins – ban.do; Earrings – Kate Spade; Clutch – American Apparel

Art and I left Hayden with a sitter, besides our mothers, for the first time on Saturday afternoon. We saw a matinee, Argo, which was excellent, and enjoyed a quick lunch afterwards. Everything went well with the sitter and we’re already daydreaming of the next Saturday afternoon venture we can go on in a couple of weeks.

Because  we were just going to the movies, I ended up skipping the dress I was planning on wearing, thinking it would be a bit much for an afternoon date, and instead wore my favorite boyfriend jeans and dressed it up just a bit with a silk blouse and a blazer.  For years moms religiously fell back on the cardigan as the main layering staple, but I’m telling you,  the blazer is the new cardigan for casual-wear outside of the office.  I love the structure it gives any outfit, and its versatility to go from day to night with the right under pieces.  With the addition of this navy blazer to my wardrobe, I’m now pretty well set in the blazer category, having a great black and colored option I can fall back on.  Eventually I’ll wear this blazer with a tight T-Shirt or tank, or maybe even a form fitting turtleneck in a pretty color, but for now I’m sticking with loose blouses and shirts that will hide a bit of my postpartum tummy I still have (remember 9 months on, 9 months off!).

This particular blazer is a repeat of the Mint one I already own from Zara.  You can’t go wrong with its jersey fabrication and perfect weight, working from Spring through Winter.  Layering it with the right pop of color or quirky tee keeps the Navy color from being too East Coast preppy.  Although by adding the gold loafers, I’m pretty much pigeon holing myself into the prepster category, I know 😉

If you’re looking for some options in a great Navy blazer, here are a few, in 3 different price ranges, to choose from.  The first one is the Zara blazer I own above, the middle one is from J. Crew, and the third option is if you have plenty of cash to spend, from Band of Outsiders.  Take your pick!  And a note on the (low) price range.  For a blazer, I honestly don’t think you should go super cheap here.  Sure, you could possibly find a Navy blazer from H&M or Forever 21 in the $39 or less category, but a blazer is a classic staple that you can hang onto in your closet for quite some time.  You want it to last and stand the test of time, both in quality of materials and construction, but also silhouette, meaning you don’t want it to be too trendy looking.  Therefor, the Zara price range is just about as low as I’d go for something as classic as a blazer.

Weekend Links: Neiman Marcus + Target Product Lookbook Is Here!

I wrote about the happy news a couple of months back when I first heard that Neiman Marcus and Target would be collaborating on a series of 50 Holiday gift giving products.  The list of designers was impressive, and the price range seemed reasonable, but would hte products actually be something to really get excited about?  Well the lookbook is finally here and for the most part, each product is beautiful and you can tell they were thoughtfully designed.  While I am not in love with every single item (I don’t really need a $50 DVF yoga mat), most items are pretty spectacular, without being over the top.  Here’s a peek at some of my favorites. 1. Prabul Garang Cape 2. Robert Rodriguez Top 3. Skaist Taylor Vest 4. Marchesa Girls Dress

5. Marc Jacobs Pouches (sold separately) 6. Brian Atwood Leather Gloves 7. Eddie Borgo Box (see my interview with Eddie Borgo here) 8. Joseph Altazurra Tray

My biggest hope is that the quality is better than the usual Target and designer collaboration infusion lines.  The last one with Missoni left such a bad taste in my mouth.  But having worked with Neiman Marcus for years in the past, I know their quality expectations would not let something sub par slide through, especially when their name is stamped on it.  So if that holds true here, then this collab will be top notch.  To see the full lookbook, please visit the Neiman Marcus blog.

In other places, you can see a few of the pieces I wrote for Disney Baby this week:

DIY Friendly Ghost Onesie for Baby

Battling the 45 Minute Nap Monster

Pumpkin Fun for Babies and Toddlers

Have a great weekend everyone!  See you back on Monday.
