I found out some pretty exciting news the other day, one of my (online) friends, Kelly of View Along The Way, is going to be featured in Better Homes & Gardens in one of their upcoming summer issues! I couldn’t have been more excited for such a talented and fun blog friend to be chosen. Kelly has a sincere, funny writing style, and does some amazing DIY projects (check out this Ralph Lauren inspired light fixture her and her husband recently made!). She is also incredibly supportive of her blogging buddies, so when she asked for some styling advice on what the heck to wear in a magazine, I was more than happy to lend my two cents. The photo stylist from BH&G advised her to wear jeans or capris, nothing too loose or with crazy patterns, and something lighter colored, since the issue will be published in Summer. She suggested perhaps a cardigan and tank. I couldn’t help but gain some style inspiration from a recent outfit I pulled together to attend the Petunia Pickle Bottom store opening and Spring handbag preview party. IMG_9866 Blazer – Zara; Chambray Shirt – J. Crew; Cafe Capris – J. Crew; Polka Dot Skimmers – Madewell; Gold Watch – Michael Kors; Scarf – Gap; Handbag – Reed Krakoff IMG_9858 Since it was still winter, but on the verge of Spring, I wanted to dress in some lighter colors, but layers to stay warm. I also wanted to look pulled together and chic, since we were going to be meeting the designer and Founder of PPB, DeNai Jones. I brought my favorite blazer from Zara, in mint, out of hiding and wore it for the first time since last spring, but layered it over chambray. To add some fun pattern mixing, I wore it back to some animal print capris and polka dot flats. IMG_9869 I have said it before, I love the blazer as the alternative to the cardigan, so when Kelly mentioned cardigan, I immediately suggested a lightweight blazer, in a light color, instead. It’s a piece that looks a bit more pulled together than a cardigan, and in the right fabric, is perfect for Spring and Summer. Think ponte knit, linen, cotton twill and jersey. These are all great fabrics for the warmer months, and the bonus is that they are much more flexible and move with you, perfect for busy moms chasing kids around and coordinating DIY projects. What-To-Wear-For-A-Magazine-Shoot For Kelly’s photo shoot style board, I pulled a crisp white blazer in a soft cotton fabric as her key layering piece. The one button detail will give the jacket more of a casual feel, especially when layered over a simple, light colored tee. I know the photo stylist said no crazy patterns, but a bit of texture is fun. After all Kelly is a Home Decor blogger so it should stand to reason that she’d love a little pattern play. These small dot capris would be perfect. Kelly claims to not be a “capri person”, and believe me, I’m not either, but when styled right, capris are charming and comfortable, especially for the warm season. Add in a neutral flat (or she could go for a bold color if she’s feeling sassy), and she’s almost set. I chose a closed toe shoe as opposed to a sandal because I wasn’t sure how comfortable Kelly would feel having her toes showing in a magazine for the whole world to see for all of eternity! But I do love the hole-punch feature, giving these skimmers a lighter, more breezy feel to them. Add in a fun piece of jewelry in a rainbow of colors, a chunky watch and a simple pair of studs, and the look is complete.

1. Kate Spade Studs; 2. Vince Camuto One Button Blazer; 3. James Perse T-Shirt; 4. J. Crew Dot Cafe Capri; 5. Madewell Skimmer; 6. Michael Kors Gold Watch; 7. Kate Spade Flats Necklace

So what do you think?  What would you wear for a shoot in Better Homes & Gardens? Something similar to this look I styled, or completely different?  Any other ideas for Kelly?  Congratulations Kelly, I’m thrilled for you and can’t wait to see your beaming face and beautiful home in the pages of BH&G!

Daily Style – One Great Dress

While trying on pieces from the Prabal Gurung collection last week at Target, I spied this dress hanging in the back of the department. From afar it looked a lot like a hybrid of a J. Crew and Anthropologie dress, and I was delighted to see that up close it looked pretty well made and the fabric was quite nice. I tried it on and couldn’t believe how flattering it was on. And it had pockets! Nothing beats a dress with pockets. IMG_0567 Dress – Target; Denim Jacket – Nordstrom BP Department; Bootie – Sam Edelman IMG_0558 The dress is comfortable and I was able to make it work all weekend long. On Saturday when the weather was a bit warmer I wore it with very lady like bow sandals, and then on Sunday added a denim jacket and the booties for a trip to the stables and lunch at the beach. I love that it can be very ladylike and also can be made a bit more casual with the right layering pieces. IMG_0582 IMG_0573 I try to add at least one dress I love to my wardrobe each spring season. Because it’s warm here most of the year, I get so much use out of dresses and it’s great to always have a dress option when going to a special occasion. If I don’t add another dress to my closet for the next 6 months I don’t think it will be a problem. Also, a few friends on Instagram commented that it’s not nursing friendly, and while it takes a bit more work, it is not entirely hopeless. I found that I just snuck off to a corner and unzipped the dress. Wiht my nursing cover on, no one was the wiser. For the most part, I think most pieces can work if you just get creative. I really try to shop for the long term, and the long term does not involve me nursing Hayden beyond a year. For the mean time, with a little bit of trickery, I find a way to make most of my clothes work for nursing. Sequins are just about the only thing that really are nursing unfriendly. Scratchy for baby and mommy! IMG_0594 IMG_0599 IMG_0598

In Case You Were Wondering About Prabal Gurung For Target

Target launched the latest of their designer collaborations this past Sunday, this time teaming up with Prabal Gurungm the former head designer of Bill Blass, and most well known for recently dressing First Lady Michelle Obama. The launch was per usual, highly anticipated by many fans of Target, who couldn’t wait to get their hands on the most recent collaboration. While nothing from the look book really struck my fancy, making me rush into Target at 8 am on a Sunday, I was open minded and still wanted to check it out in person to see how it looked. I’m usually one of the biggest cheerleaders of these collaborations, but was very disappointed when I saw and touched in person, what had come about from this partnership. When I tried the items on in the fitting room, disappointment turned into frustration. Here’s a look at what I tried on. IMG_4461 This first dress was fun, with it’s bright color and flirty details, but the material was cheap, leaving me feeling rather exposed, especially in the back side where you could visibly see my panties. IMG_4468 This black and white number was a joke. The material was a shiny cotton/synthetic blend that was stiff and ill fitting. I know I’m tall, but it was also awkwardly short. Had it draped better I wouldn’t have minded the short length, but it sort of just stuck out, leaving me feeling like a mild wind would have blown it right up. IMG_4472 This dress was the most flattering on. I liked the sleeve length and the nipped in waist sort of helped to hide the pooch. I even liked the nod to the art deco period with it’s color blocking. But the color mix seemed a bit off, sort of outdated if you will. And the material was super scratchy, rubbing at my underarms. IMG_4477 This dress was the WORST! For someone so focused on cuts and how a piece drapes on a woman’s body, I can’t believe he would even allow this to pass the line. The body was this hideous jersey that, as you can see, clung to the worst assets of my body, and the bottom portion was some type of printed charmeuse or chiffon? And the ruffle hit right at my butt. This silhouette couldn’t have been more unflattering if it tried. No comment on the print either. You either love it or hate it. It’s not for me, but I can see the appeal. It’s bright, fun and unique. IMG_4505 This shirt, again, horrible on unles you have a super flat tummy. When we’re on the subject of these types of tops, let me also add that if you have a pooch, this is not the way to go ladies. It will only ever hug and accentuate that pooch, never drape over it. IMG_4513 This blouse was horrendous! I can see how this could be beautiful, for the Fall, and in the right fabrics. But this version just looked out of place amongst all the brights, and the faux leather collar looked horribly cheap. IMG_4509 This little top was another disappointment. The yoke was a super scratchy and very stiff type of organza that looked like it maybe was 50 cents a yard. The body of the top was in that same cheap printed jersey material, and it just hung and tugged on my frame. IMG_4487 I’ll end on a high note. This was probably my favorite piece. It is in that same flattering cut of the color block dress above, but the fabric seemed a little less scratchy, and it had just a touch of the fun print down the middle. I still wouldn’t spend $40 on this but it was cute on.

The bottom line, my overall impression was that it just all looked very cheap. I honestly can’t believe Prabal Gurung, who says he believes in quality and craftsmanship, would let these pieces pass through. The fabrics were some of the worst I’d ever seen and felt. If you aren’t sure if something is poor quality, the first tell tale sign is to feel the fabric. If it’s a cotton and looks too shiny or feels too stiff, or if it is scratchy, then chances are it’s of poor quality. At the end of the day, for the prices Target charges for some of these pieces, you’re better off buying most of their Massimo items, which are better quality and less expensive. Or be patient and diligent and shop the sale racks at higher end stores. I’ve got some beautiful and well made dresses for cheaper than these, off the sale racks at Madewell and Anthropologie. Sorry Target, but I think this girl is gonna need you to really wow me going forward, if I’m going to buy into these designer collaborations.

*Also, I hope I didn’t offend anyone if you loved the collection. The prints, shoes and accessories were all fun and seemed better made than the clothing. I am just finding that the older I get and the more serious I get about value for my money, the more picky I’m becoming when it comes to clothing. With that being said, did anyone buy anything, and if so, what did you think about it?

Daily Style – The Sequin White Dress and Galentine’s Day

For as long as I can remember being a full grown gal, I’ve disliked Valentine’s Day. Also New Year’s Eve. Not because I didn’t have a date, but because I had a date, and I always put too much pressure on said date. My guy is great. Fantastic really, at almost everything. But there are two things he is not. #1 He is not a romantic. #2 He is not the best planner. I can’t say I’m actually either of those 2 things either, but us girls have a way of thinking/feeling that our men have to be but we don’t. For instance I haven’t even got a card for my man yet, and Valentine’s Day is just a mere few hours away. I digress, I know.
IMG_9895
Anyhow, for the longest time I built up all these expectations of what we should be doing on V Day (on NYE too). We should dine at a hip restaurant and he should shower me with flowers and gifts. Those things very rarely happened, and so then I’d get all pissy like a big ol’ brat, and I would be all “why didn’t you read my mind and take me to that other restaurant?!” And he was all “what’s wrong with this restaurant, we always eat at this restaurant?!” And I was all “exactly! Duh!”
IMG_9893
And then I grew up I guess, or gave up some of you may say. But really I’ll just take the fact that I have a good man who loves me and is loyal and trustworthy and hardworking, and still wants to grope me after 3 kids and almost 15 years of marriage haha! I’ll also take fun and thoughtful and sweet gal pals that love the holiday so much, they’ll throw a Galentine’s Day Party to show her love for her bestest, funnest gals. That’s what my friend Rachel did. On Saturday we all got together for an early evening of snacking and drinking and being silly, and there were hearts everywhere!
IMG_9894 IMG_9899 IMG_9902
It was a perfect evening, made all the more perfect for the fact that I got to wear my white sequin dress again! How do you like that?!? I bought that thing thinking I’d wear it once and never have another use for it again, and God just presented me with another fab opportunity to wear it again. (Also, I know God isn’t really worried about me getting to wear dresses multiple times, but I’ll thank him all the same because He can always use a few more shout outs, right?)
IMG_9898
I wore it back to black opaque tights and my black booties, and added my big pink poof and I was all set. It was a wonderful night, so thank you Rachel.

Wishing you all a very happy Valentine’s Day. And if you don’t have a Valentine, or you’re pissed at him/her because they didn’t take you to the “right” restaurant, have a happy Galentine’s Day and, tell your favorite gal pal you love her. IMG_0158 If you follow me on Instagram you know that I made this little onesie for Hayden’s first Valentine’s Day. I think most baby holiday stuff slapped with a “first” label on it is a bit much, so I opted for something modern and updated, that he could continue to wear after V Day.  The how-to is quite easy and follows the same technique as the heart jeans from yesterday! A bit of advice though, black fabric paint and white cotton knit are frienemies, so be very careful as you can’t wash off the black paint, as you can with the white paint on denim. There will most likely be some smudges, but that’s okay. It still looks really cute overall and everyone will be focusing on the cute baby anyhow, not a smudged arrow! Add hearts in place of the aqua arrows, or switch up the colors. The possibilities are endless! And a few have emailed and asked how this wore over time and with multiple washings, and it did great!  Lasted him almost a year in fact!  Enjoy and I’ll see you back tomorrow with a new style post! DIY Painted Heart Jeans

DIY-Painted-Heart-Jeans It doesn’t look like brightly colored denim is going away anytime soon, especially for the little ones, and so I bought another pair for Taylor last week when Target had them on sale for $12 each. I originally planned to have her just wear them as is, but was struck by a bit of inspiration over today and decided to add some stenciled hearts to them. They’re great for Valentine’s Day, but of course little girls can get away with wearing hearts on their pants all year long. DIY-Neon-Girls-Heart-Jeans Here’s the really simple how-to, so you can make some for your little gal, or for yourself!  First gather your supplies.  You’ll need to cut out a heart stencil out of a thicker type of paper, like a cardboard cereal box. Make sure your stencil is equally square so that you can use it as a guide when placing your hearts.  You’ll then need some fabric paint (I prefer Tulip fabric paint for projects like these as opposed to multi-surface paint like the one the Martha Stewart line makes), some sponge brushes and of course your canvas.  I found these jeans so great to work with because there was minimal smudging on the fabric and when I made a mistake, it washed off very easily.  I have never had good results trying to wash fabric paint off of knit cotton or canvas.  DIY-Heart-Painted-Jeans-Tutorial A few tips and tricks.  You’ll want to make 2 stencils because you’ll notice that after you complete the first leg, the paper will start to break down a bit from the moisture of the paint, and some bleeding and smudging will occur.  So cut two stencils so they stay fresh.  When you place your stencil on your denim, make sure to hold firmly in place, and then apply paint in a blotting motion as opposed to brushing or filling it in.  Then lift the stencil up in one swift clean motion so it doesn’t smudge your heart.  Keep a moist rag on hand for mess ups.

As far as a pattern goes, I tend to be a little willy nilly with planning and pattern placement.  I like to eyeball, and initially took out my ruler to try and make the hearts all perfectly symmetrical, but that just isn’t my style.  Instead I decided to just go for it and started with one heart up top towards the waist, and then, using my stencil as my guide, spaced each heart out from corner to corner of each heart (as shown in image 2), and then staggered them down, always using the stencil as the guide and just going corner to corner.  If you notice, there are four rows of hearts just staggered but going straight down the entire length of the pant.  It worked out perfectly and I didn’t drive myself crazy. DIY-Painted-Heart-Jeans-Tutorial DIY-Neon-Painted-Heart-Jeans-How-To DIY-Painted-Heart-Jeans-2 Taylor is pretty much in love with these, and I pretty much want a pair for myself now. Because honestly, the only thing better than faded neon denim, is faded neon denim with hearts painted on them. Am I right, or am I right? Enjoy, and please let me know if you make a pair! The Debate Over Quality Versus Quantity

I’d be honored if you’d consider “liking” my Facebook page, or subscribing to my RSS Feed. Or better yet, receive some Love straight to your inbox by entering your email in that box to the right! Love is way better than junk mail!

quality-over-quantity The two main places I worked at during my career in the fashion industry, were high end and/or designer labels that concentrated a majority of their manufacturing here in the US. If they had their factories elsewhere, they were run by the parent company and paid American wages, or were fastidiously researched to ensure healthy and quality work conditions. One company charged over $500 for a pair of their pants, and the other company charged upwards of $85 for a T-Shirt. To the average price conscious person, the prices seemed aspirational at best, ridiculous at worst.

From my works behind the scenes though I got to see why we charged $500 for a pair of pants. The wool was sheared from our own dedicated farm of sheep grown in the bountiful hills of Transylvania. It was brought here and cleaned and scoured for hours, then spun on machines that we had purchased and owned in our own manufacturing plants in Irvine, CA. The knit was then dyed by hand in-house to ensure consistent color and quality, and fluffed for hours that resulted in a soft, airy feel to the wool. The knit was then woven into blankets that were hand sewn by skilled seamstresses, again in our own manufacturing plants. An average garment took 10 hours from start to finish to complete, and many of those hours were spent in the hands of workers, making California minimum wage. You can start to do the math and see how the dollars started adding up. I got very, very skilled at being not only able to defend our $500 price tag for a pair of pants, but justify it as well, to anyone that thought we were high on crack.

The T-Shirt place I worked at was much the same. The use of quality cotton, dyed and manufactured in LA, QC’ed in our LA factories, and so on. Some items were outsourced to China, as was the case with the fancy designer place I worked for, but it was always the last alternative and it was usually for woven garments. China has the market on making quality wovens, and manufacturers here in the US can rarely compete.

All this to say that when people talk about quality versus quantity, I can usually nod my head in earnest agreement. But here’s the thing, most of us can’t afford that kind of quality. While we would love to say that our wool garments come from happy happy sheep in Transylvania, most of us have very ordinary jobs and lives that not only don’t need fancy sheep’s wool, but just can’t afford it. So what do the rest of us do that want quality but can’t afford real fancy quality?

Well I’m still trying to figure it out. I’d like to think that if you spend a bit more and avoid consistently shopping at places like Target and Forever 21 for your wardrobe, you’re good. But the plain truth is that even places like Banana Republic, J. Crew and even Zara offers the disguise of quality wrapped up in a pretty label and glossy ad campaigns. My $89 J. Crew white button down just shrunk at least 2 sizes after hand washing it, and the “quality” shoes I bought for Taylor at Nordstrom, that set me back almost $50 just lost 2 jewels in less than 3 months of wear. The nice thing though about both of those experiences is that I know I can take them back and (I did), and both companies offer a return or exchange, along with a sincere apology. I once tried returning a sweater to Forever 21 that unraveled with one wear and zero washing, and the manager almost laughed me out of the store. She referred to their return policy and basically said, “don’t you know our stuff is crap? It’s the chance you take when you spend $9 for a sweater.” Touche and shame on me.

Good quality that is still within reach is not impossible to find and I’m trying to be better about doing my research first, and being very selective with what I buy and how I spend my money. I needed some new workout gear and so asked for a gift card to Lululemon for Christmas, and bought my first No Limits tank, and man do I love that thing. At $64 a pop I better love it right? The price is what I like to call, crazy stupid expensive, but the company has a minimum 5 year quality guarantee and they are committed to social and environmental responsibility, which I wholeheartedly appreciate. I posted a picture of it on Instagram this morning, and a friend advised me that Old Navy has a very similar tank for sale. I got very excited for a few minutes thinking I could own 5 of those tanks for the cost of 1 Lululemon tank, but do I really want 5 of something decent when I can have 1 of something very excellent?

It’s a question I wrestle with quite often. This weekend, I’m going to finally delve into the book Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost Of Cheap Fashion, and see if I can form a more concrete opinion and strategy. I’ll report back with what I think of the book. Overall though in the last couple of years I have tried to stick to buying less, buying more classic pieces, and investing in what appears to be better pieces in those classics. And if I get the occasional bad apple, I’ve been trying to limit my purchases at stores that stand behind their quality and will gladly return an item if there is a problem. I am also trying to concern myself less and less with trends and fast fashion, since that is where I can get caught up in buying the cheap for one season mentality. It’s a work in progress though, since after all, I am still a sucker for some trends. And the occasional purchase from Target, like a killer leopard skirt, never hurt anyone, right? The older I get though, I try to remember that I’d rather be a slave to my savings account and my checkbook, than a slave to fashion. Remember that moment when Carrie Bradshaw realized that she had enough for the down payment on her apartment that she needed, sitting right in her very own closet, stacked with Louboutins? I don’t want that to ever be my life story.

So when do you decide to debunk quality for quantity, or at least for a lesser price? Is it on trend items, workout gear, seasonal items? When do you decide to bite the bullet and pay up for something you hope will last you longer? And while we all love to hold onto the ideal of quality versus quantity, when and how often do we really live by that motto and sacrifice and save to get there? I know I don’t nearly enough.

DIY Neon Valentine’s

As I was punching out hearts for my paper chains the other day, I thought how pretty the punched out templates looked, and it inspired these Valentine’s. I think the kids think I’m a stickler because I’ve never let them give their classmates candy with their Valentines, so I wanted to create something this year a bit more fun and different than what they usually pass out. I chose gumballs for their bright colors but really you could put skittles or even confetti if you don’t want to do treats. And of course you can make them any color you like, but of course I find the neon variety the most fun. neon-valentines-2 To make your own DIY Neon Valentine’s, you’ll need some colored and white card stock, a paper cutter, heart paper punch, double side tape, neon thread, small cellophane bags (I use the ones they sell at Target), and some sort of filler. neonvalentinessupplies vdaytreat Begin by cutting out strips of your card stock, mine were about 2.5″ wide, then punch out your hearts. Fill your bags with your treat, then fold over a 1″ piece of your card stock over your cello bag. Stitch in place, or use some washi tape if you don’t feel like breaking out the sewing machine. Once sealed off, attach some double side tape to the back of your cut out strip of heart, fold over and tape in place. All done! neonvalentinestutorial The bright and colorful ones will be passed out to Syd’s classmates. Taylor preferred the mint and neon pink combo, so she’ll be handing out those. neon-valentines-1 I’m also thinking these would make a really sweet invite. Put the details of the party inside the bag with just the title peeking through the heart. neon-valentines-3 These are so easy to make that I had both Taylor and Syd help and we completed about 30 of them in just a coupel of hours yesterday, having them home sick and a baby with a double ear infection. What that means is that these are very doable. Just get a little assembly line action going and it’s just repetition of cut, fill, sew and tape, over and over. I kind of like those kind of crafts the best, where you can do them without a lot of concentration or focus. That usually means they’re easy enough for kids to do too. neonmintvalentines3 Oh, and there’s a perfect space on the back for the kids to just write a short message and and a to/from. neonmintvalentines2 So what are you doing for Valentine’s this year? Honestly, we have done store bought for the past 2 years, so it was kind of fun to make our own this year. I can’t guarantee I’ll DIY ours every year, but these are simple enough that I just might!

I’ll be 37 in 2 months! While I know that’s not “old” by any means, it is old enough to come to terms with the fact that my skin has started to change and it’s time my beauty routine changed with it. After an intervention from my friend and makeup guru Amber last year, I started thinking it’s time for out with the old and in with the new, and here are a few new(er) items I’ve added to my beauty arsenal. They may not be right for all skin types or concerns, but for my skin, they helped transform my skin from dull and blah to bright, and even glowing. 5-beauty-products-for-women-in-the-their-30's 1. Smashbox Photo Finish (Hydrating) Primer – I know what you’re thinking, why do I need to add another layer to my face? Well for me, as my age spots started to become more pronounced, I needed my foundation to do a better job adhering to my skin, and staying on throughout the day. The primer does just that. And my skin is super dry, so the moisturizing primer helps added a bit of dewiness to my skin, making it look brighter and fresher. There’s a standard primer if you don’t need the extra hydration.

2.Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer – And another primer you ask?!? Yes! While I’ve been using an eyeshadow primer for years to help my shadow last and prevent those ugly smudge creases that happens when your eyeliner rubs and runs on your lid, I’ve never used one that I love this much. This primer has just the lightest tint of color, so I use it every single day, whether I wear eyeshadow and liner or not, because it smooths out the color tone of my lid, giving me a smooth finish and hiding dark tones and spidery veins from lack of sleep (from a certain baby keeping me up all night). This is hands down the best primer I’ve ever used.

3.Smashbox Halo Highlighting Wand – I don’t use this every single day, but do use it several times a week when I need a little brightening. I apply some to my cheekbones, upper lids and along my nose and above my lip. It adds the slightest bit of glow and brightens your overall skin tone in just the right spots.

4.Vitamin D Oil – Lots of hydrating oils exist out there, but I really enjoy this one for it’s all natural properties and because it’s not too heavy but definitely feels like it’s working. And it’s loaded with Vitamin D. It was also voted a best buy by Nordstrom. I add a few drops every night to my skin and also during the day if I’m feeling extra dry.

5.Clarisonic Pro – Whether you get the Pro or a smaller version makes no difference, but either way, get one of these! I asked for mine for my birthday almost two years ago and over the last 2 years it has more than paid for itself. Since I’ve been using this, I haven’t felt the need to get a facial, and I stopped buying this fancy glycolic acid cream to help with my dry flaky skin (that was $85 a jar) because this has taken care of that flakiness. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had a pimple, even throughout my pregnancy last year I never broke out, and my skin is really overall much smoother and less dry than it has ever been before!

So these are my top 5 loves for good looking skin in your 30’s and beyond. Do you have any you can recommend?

What I Wore To Alt Summit 2013

I am pretty proud of myself that, with the exception of my Clue Party dress, I didn’t over think my wardrobe choices too much for Alt. Also, with the exception of my Clue party dress, I didn’t buy anything new. I had heard that Alt was filled with as many fashion conscious woman as a tent at Bryant Park during NYFW, and while that was pretty much true, it was in a much more relaxed and fun approach (and atmosphere). I’ve learned over the last couple of years what I truly love, and have let go of that silly notion that you must have a new outfit for every occasion, so I focused on packing pieces that I knew were a bit stylish, but were also heavy on comfort. I also didn’t try to coordinate any new outfits, but stuck to what I knew worked and I felt good in. WIW To Alt Day 1 {Blazer – Zara, Lace Tee – Forever 21 but similar here, Silk Pants – Club Monaco but similar here, Booties – Stuart Weitzman, Necktie – Just Lovely Things}

The first day I wore one of absolute favorite outfits, seen exactly as is, in this post. I did add the cute Just Lovely Things gold sequin neck tie though to jazz it up a bit and received a lot of compliments on it. That’s the thing about Alt, no one bats an eye at sparkles and sequins during the day, it’s just par for the course.  I love these pants beyond measure, which I know sounds ridiculous, but I have been able to wear them several times a week since about 4 weeks postpartum, and I love that I can wash them on the gentle cycle (even though they say dry clean only).  I know they don’t seem like they would be flattering, but they are so forgiving and so comfortable.  I felt very good on the first day. WIW To Alt Day 2b On the second day I went with another great stand by outfit and added my DIY statement necklace, and a DIY crown I made at the Land Of Nod tea party that they hosted. I added tights and the same Stuart Weitzman booties and called it a day. Again, I was comfortable and felt really put together and polished.  The very professional looking photos were taken by the lovely Leslie of Leslie Fandrich Photography.   Thanks so much for indulging me Leslie! WIW To Alt Day 2 The rest of the time I had to just snag some iPhone pictures but that’s okay, you can get the idea!  The first night we arrived in town, different sponsors hosted small intimate dinners all throughout the city and I was initially going to dress up but I decided to go casual and was so happy I did because it was a cold and dreary night to get dressed up and head out.  I got to meet Wendy and Tyler of Blue Lily Photo, as well as Alix from a Ruffled Life and we had a great time chatting it up about totally inappropraite things.  My other casual outfit was worn on Saturday during the day, when I chose to bring Hayden in with me.  Very simple, just a neon yellow silk blouse and gray cashmere sweater, both from J. Crew, and my trusty Lauren Conrad skinny jeans!  If you haven’t purchased these jeans yet on my advice, what are you waiting for people?!  They’re on sale for $29.99 right now! what-i-wore-to-alt-summit-2013 Thursday night was the Clue party, and I wore an all over white sequin dress from Madewell, and went as Mrs. White. I paired it with these nude lace tights and my StyleMint nude heels. I agonized over purchasing this dress because it is so impractical, but for the price ($45), it is a great dress to hold onto for many years. Friday night were the mini parties and I wore another dress I already had in my closet, also from Madewell and also purchased on sale for $29. When I bought this dress I didn’t have any idea where I would wear it to, but knew it was a good piece to have just in case, and I was right! I’ve since worn it about 5 times. I paired it with black tights and the same Stuart Weitzman booties again, a Rouge & Whimsy clutch, and added the gold sequin neck tie and wore it as a headband! Again, no one bats an eye at sequins in the hair, or any part of your body.

So let’s break it down! Recap, tips and advice on packing for Alt, if you find yourself going in the future…
– 1 new item purchased (hooray!) Everything else was from my closet and worn exactly how I’ve worn them in the past. I didn’t worry about trying to be all fancy and switch things up, just stuck with what worked. Remember, If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

– Only wore 3 pairs of shoes the entire time! 1 low heel bootie, worn on Wednesday night and Saturday during the day, 1 high heeled bootie worn both Thursday and Friday and Friday night, and 1 pair of nude pumps worn Thursday night. Remember, no one is keeping track of how many outfit or shoe changes you have. Just focus on looking and feeling good and don’t worry about packing 20 pairs of shoes, because honestly no one pays attention!

– Kept my accessories minimal but all in the same color tone, gold, for ease of packing. I wore the same gold watch, rings, and pair of black and gold studs, and switched up a couple of the necklaces and added my ban.do pins where needed. And remember, ban.do is giving my readers a 20% discount site wide through 2/17 with the code fortheloveof!

– Wear layers because some conference rooms are hot and some are cold. It was great having the blazer and layered sweaters each day. I never felt like I had to wear my jacket this way.

– Your best asset is your smile, and a good handshake (or hug if you’re like me), so don’t stress and have fun!
