Daily Style Week 5 – How To Wear a Pencil Skirt

My talk at the Penelope Lane conference on Saturday went well, and this is what I wore to speak. I don’t dare say great because I’m afraid I rambled a bit too much, my intro about my past life and career went on a little too long I’m afraid, and I may have used the word popular (offhandedly referring to myself, as not being popular), and talked about Louis Vuitton handbags. I now understand why politicians and actors use teleprompters. If anything though I was honest and spoke off the cuff most of the time, not strictly following my outline that I had written. I hope for the most part people got the point I was trying to make; that blogging can be time consuming and frustrating, but if you love it, and write about what you love and stay focused on that, you can turn it into something that pays a few of the bills. If you were at my talk, is that what you got out of it? If not, my apologies, but there you go, that’s the point I was trying to make.

Skirt – Target; Button Up Shirt- J. Crew; Sweatshirt – James Perse; Heels – ShoeMint; Earrings – Kate Spade; Flower Poof – Ban.Do; Ring – Banana Republic

On to the outfit. I’m 5 weeks postpartum now and this outfit greatly benefited by the use of some Spanx. And bright lipstick, heavy concealer and a big pink poof. In all seriousness though, I found this skirt at Target a couple of weeks ago and while pencil skirts usually scream “office attire” to me, I knew I could make it work into a more casual life. I brought it home with me because of the pattern, the price and the fact that it was an elastic waistband, my constant companion these days.  Coming up I’ll share 2 more ways I made this leopard skirt a bit more casual and suitable for everyday wear.

For this look I layered a crisp white button up shirt under a casual sweatshirt and added a fun flower poof to tell people “hey, I don’t take myself too seriously!”  While this look is still very much office appropriate, the sweatshirt is a more casual option than a blazer or cardigan sweater even.  If anything it gives it a different spin. A neutral pump blends in with my skin color and doesn’t stand out that I’m wearing high heels and am ready for a business meeting.  A pop of color in my fuchsia lipstick and pink earrings also adds whimsy and makes it a little less serious.  Lastly, a sleek ponytail adds the final element to say this look is more fun and casual than all about business.

So how would you style this skirt to make it more casual?  Linking up with WIWW and Monday Mingle

I’m speaking at the Penelope Lane Boutique & Blog Conference this morning and I’m nervous.  I’ve spoken in front of audiences hundreds of times (as part of my old job regularly presenting the line to clients, speaking became 2nd nature to me), but when you haven’t done it in a while you start to feel a little rusty.  I know a few minutes in I’ll get my groove going, but those first few minutes are always the most nerve wracking aren’t they?  I’m passing out a print of this quote to all that attend my talk, in hopes of breaking the ice and to help secure a good review.  You can’t be disappointed in someone who gives you gifts right?  Ha!

So please wish me luck and think good thoughts for me at about 11 am PST today.  I’d appreciate it!  A few things I’ve enjoyed (and written) this week…

To Do This Weekend: Apple Picking

I think it’s safe to say that those of us living in an urban/city type of environment, Southern California included, don’t have many opportunities to experience a very rustic, farm-like life on a regular basis.  So when we get the chance to visit a working farm, even if we have to drive 1.5 hours to get there, and give our kids an experience out in the “country” , we take it.  Last weekend, along with my daughter’s Girl Scout troop, we visited an apple farm and had a real farm experience, complete with animals, honey bees, and apple picking.

Oak Glen is one of the best and most well known places to visit if one would like to pick apples.  You have a few choices of farms to visit, but we enjoy Willowbrook Farm the most.  Located right next door to the larger Riley’s Farm, Willowbrook is much smaller but also has a more family-run, down home feel.

You can pay a small fee and take a tour of the small farm, which includes meeting their small group of animals, feeding their hens, a tractor ride around the farm, apple butter and honey tasting, and cider pressing.  They fit a large number of activities into a short amount of time (less than 1.5 hours), but because it’s a small farm, you don’t feel rushed or overwhelmed accomplishing so many things.  You even get a freshly dipped caramel apple at the end of your tour for all your hard work.  It’s a great overall experience for kids and adults alike, although adults without kids could certainly skip the tractor ride.  This year when we visited, Willowbrook’s apples weren’t quite ready for picking yet, so we did have to walk next door and pick at Riley’s Farm.  It was quite busy and much larger than Willowbrook and definitely had more of a commercial feel than next door, where the owner of the farm is present and helps give tours on a daily basis.  If you want a sure thing, visit Riley’s, but if you call and plan ahead, I think Willowbrook is worth taking a chance on, because I can pretty much guarantee you’ll be happy with your experience there. Besides, they have a really cute and quaint gift shop that carries specialty food items including their apple butter.  Roaming the store is always a highlight of our trip there. When visiting the farm, keep a few things in mind:

Wear walking shoes as it is a real farm with primarily dirt and grass walkways.

Wear sunscreen and bring water and snacks.

Dress in layers, as Oak Glen is at 4600 elevation and can be cold but warms up later in the day.

Bring a camera

Consider packing a picnic lunch to eat at the nice little shaded park next door.

Tours cost $9 per child and $6 per adult.  Call ahead to confirm space availability, as school groups do go out and visit, especially during the week.

After you’ve picked a bushel of apples, here are a few recipe ideas for you to consider:

A perfect fall libation: this recipe for Cider Rum Punch sounds phenomenal.

If you’re in need of something sweet: this recipe for Butter Rum Apple Crisp Tart should do the trick.

Apples for breakfast?  Try these: Quick Apple Streusel Pancakes

Please let me know if you have any questions though or if I’ve missed anything!  And of course if you’ve been somewhere different that you’ve enjoyed in Southern California, please share!

In Anticipation of Fall – Hollywood Housewife

Continuing with the blogger series In Anticipation of Fall,we continue with Laura from Hollywood Housewife.  I had the pleasure of meeting Laura at Blissdom this year and she really is a charming lady from Oklahoma, living smack dab in the middle of Hollywood with her producer husband.  She writes about topics as far reaching as her recent journey to Sri Lanka with World Vision, to being a good mother, to what she reads each month, and she is well read and always has some good recommendations.  I loved reading her answers to this Q&A and I know you will too.  Thanks Laura for helping me out.  It’s meant a lot to me!

Fall is officially here and the blogger series, In Anticipation of Fall continues, today with the wonderful Lindsay of Delighted Momma. I found Lindsay’s blog a while back via one of her great polymer clay DIY’s and have been visiting ever since to get recipes, DIY’s and great skincare tips. Lindsay just recently had a baby herself so I was thrilled and honored that she agreed to take part in this little Q&A considering how pressed for time we both are. So thanks Lindsay! And if you, or anyone else, tries one of the fall cocktails she mentions below, let me know because the vanilla vodka chai sounds incredible!

*Edited to add 2 recipes I found that sound delicious! I’m not sure if they’re the ones that Lindsay herself speaks of, but for now they’ll get you started!

The Best Polish Colors For Fall

Fall is officially here and the easiest, quickest and most cost effective way you can transition your style into Fall is to change your nail color. Here are my favorite colors for Fall to do just that.  Some colors are new to-me favorites, and a couple are classics that I’ve had in my arsenal for years.  Check them out. 1. Starting with the much talked about OPI Germany Collection, German-Icure is a gorgeous, rich burgundy red with a hint of shimmer to it.  If you prefer a matte color, this isn’t necessarily the shade for you, but if you like a little bit of sparkle, try this one out.

2. Another color from the Germany Collection, Schnapps Out Of It is quite the departure from my usual shade, but I quite like it!  I terracotta color rich with orange tones, this color will look good on all shades of skin tone and will take you all the way into Spring when you start to get some color on your skin again.

3. OPI’s Quarter Of A Cent Cherry is the perfect shade of blue-red, making it the perfect shade for Fall all the way through the entire holiday season.  It looks beautiful back to rich jewel tones and is stunning set against all black.

4. OPI Lincoln Park After Dark, the original almost-black shade that debuted over 10 years ago when dark nails became mainstream for everyone, not just for goth rockers.  I’ve gone through at least 5 bottles of this classic color and it’s still going strong as a fall favorite.

5. Essie Dive Bar is for those that want to get a little daring and want to try an unusual color for the first time.  I love that it’s blue, but doesn’t really show up as blue until you look closely.  For those that are afraid of feeling like a teenager, this is the perfect amount of dark color to help you feel fun but not ridiculous.

So what are some of your Fall favorites?  Please share and tell me what else I have to try this season?  Spending so much time indoors with the baby, I have a lot of nail painting time on my hands!  And if you’d like to see my favorite Neutral polish colors, click here, and favorite polishes for a Pop of color, visit here.  Linking up with Heather and Heather for Mani Monday!

DIY Chunky Necklace

I feel a bit like a cheater after posting this photo yesterday on Instagram, indicating that I had been doing a little DIY’ing while baby napped. The truth is I did in fact make the necklace; I just didn’t make it entirely from scratch. You want to know the secret? I had help from Tori Spelling. I know right?!?

Turns out that Tori’s line of easy to assemble jewelry pieces, which allow you to design easy to make customized jewelry, is in fact very pretty and very easy to use.  When Styled by Tori Spelling partnered with us for The Craft Cabinet swag bags, they sent me a bag of pretties to work with and design a few pieces of my own.  I finally had a chance the other day to sort through the bag and this is what I put together.  Here’s how simple it was.

The collection is designed to be put together with no tools and sort of works like a puzzle.  You get a necklace back, a necklace front, and your connector and the three meet together to form the perfect, easy little necklace. You literally put the necklace together in one step, by simply attaching one end to the other by way of the connector, which is the piece you see in the top center of the picture above. The only modification I did in fact make was I ended up cutting the necklace back in half (with jewelry wire nippers) so that the necklace fit more at my collarbone as opposed to falling at my bust line.  I believe she makes shorter necklace backs to customize accordingly, I just happened to only have a longer back on hand.  It was a quick and minor adjustment though.  While the beads are sold individually to make a single strand necklace, I quite like how the two look together, and give it a much more chunkier, bolder look, don’t you agree?

So there you have it folks, now you know my dirty little secret.  I feel a little bit like Sandra Lee and her box mix “homemade” cakes, but really, not all DIY projects must be labor intensive and stressful.  One of the gals that attended Craft Cabinet made a couple of necklaces using Tori’s line to create really cute and simple statement jewelry.  She loved how easy it was to create something so pretty, so quickly, without a lot of effort on her part.  And in case you’re wondering, this is not a sponsored post.  The rep from the company just thought I’d like a few pieces of my own to play with, and I’m so glad she did.  This was the perfect little jewelry project for my tired momma brain.

If you’d like to make a necklace like this of your own, you can see the full line here.  I used the coral and pearl chains, with a necklace back and connector.  You can click on the links to find the exact pieces I used.  Quite a stunning piece for about $30 (or less if you only use one strand of beads), don’t you think?

Please let me know if you have any questions about working with this line.  It’s really quite simple.  If you don’t want to order online, I know Michael’s has a pretty large selection of the pieces in store.  Thanks for reading and please let me know if you try it!

For the Love Of Delicate Rings

Since my wedding ring still doesn’t fit, and doesn’t look like it will anytime soon, I’d like to get a simple and delicate ring, that is also affordable, to wear on my ring finger. I came across these pretty little rings from by boe and they have a beautiful selection of delicate and simple rings , along with a full range of gorgeous accessories.

These are some of my favorites.  All jewelry is either 14 karat gold filled or sterling silver, and 5% of proceeds from each purchase goes towards Women For Women.  While each ring by itself is very affordable, I could quickly see myself getting carried away in this shop!  What are some fun and affordable things you’ve been eying lately? And which one of these pretty rings is your favorite? Should I go with 1 simple hexagon ring or the gold bar ring?
